The next Miss Texas did not make the cut but I have to telll you, it did not shock me. Her evening gown was SHOCKINGLY bad for the time period and her styling read "cool 40 year old mom" (NT) | No name (NoHost/216.125.37.210) | 14:03:46 03/12/25 Wed |

They hired a couple of guys called GuyRex who were experts at training beauty pageant contestants. They also worked with California queens. One of them has since passed on. In the same way, Hispanic countries trained their winners for a long time preparing them in all phases for the competitions. Folks above are correct, sure, they had the right personnel to train them hard - but still, 5 winners in a row is such an interesting statistical aberration. Even Venezuela only managed 2 in a row at Miss Universe! In my opinion, Christy Fitchtner (1986), Courtney Gibbs (1988) and Gretchen Polhemus (1989) were clear, runaway victories. I would have gone with Diane Martin of Arizona in 1987 over Michelle Royer, but Michelle is still one of my Top 10 ever Miss USAs and I thought she should have won Miss Universe that year. The only one I didn't understand was Laura Herring in 1985, though ironically she's one of the few Miss USAs to ever bridge the gap between my two interests - film and pageantry! She was in one of the greatest avant garde films of all time - David Lynch's 'Mulholland Dr' in 2001. - Laura Herring won over Miss New Mexico, the 1st r/u. The previous year, Miss New Mexico won Miss USA. I too, thought Miss NM should have won. Miss Herring did a brief bid for fame in the movies. (NT) -- The 1st r/u to Christy Fitchner was Halle Berry, Miss Ohio who later won an Emmy and an Oscar., 01:12:37 03/14/25 Fri (ip72-220-130-86.sd.sd.cox.net/72.220.130.86)
- I thought it was a pretty weak Top 10... My favorites in the Top 10 were actually Hawaii (didn't even make Top 5) and Louisiana (3RU), but no one was super exciting to me. (NT) -- Left-Brain Pageant Fan, 03:35:54 03/14/25 Fri (99-74-180-249.lightspeed.cicril.sbcglobal.net/99.74.180.249)
- How did GuyRex choose the girls they worked with? I'm sure with their record they didn't just accept walkins. (NT) -- No name, 13:11:35 03/14/25 Fri (178.sub-174-247-13.myvzw.com/174.247.13.178)
- I'm guessing they had the luxury of choosing warmer sash states for easier success. Also, states that are known for swimsuit competitions. (NT) -- Miss the old days., 02:52:42 03/15/25 Sat (ip72-220-130-86.sd.sd.cox.net/72.220.130.86)
- Actually, GuyRex didn't recruit contestants (for example, former runners-ups) as only Gretchen had been 2nd r-up the year before she won. Laura, Christy, Michelle and Courtney were basically newbies, having only competed in maybe one other pageant (Michelle in MAO, for example). Basically, GuyRex took whoever the judges gave them, then spent six months grooming her for nationals. (Courtney told me she learned "a book's worth" about herself during those six months.) Guy and Rex were the real deal. (NT) -- No name, 04:13:14 03/15/25 Sat (c-76-31-134-123.hsd1.tx.comcast.net/76.31.134.123)

Don't forget they would wine and dine Usa judges at the ranch before the pageant. Allegedly. (NT) | . (NoHost/172.59.112.229) | 22:08:57 03/15/25 Sat |

After Guy/Rex, Al and Gail Clark (The Crystal Group) had the franchise-anyone know why they gave it up? | No name (NoHost/35.150.243.209) | 19:48:13 03/16/25 Sun |
