Having found, as Liandro had predicted, a stream and a patch of numbweed bushes, Marja and Liandro continue to press inward through the jungle. There's no point in staying on the beach when there's fresh water and a good chance of fruit trees further inland, since the threats the jungle might hold won't hesitate to emerge out onto the beach to attack them. Still, Liandro stays alert, letting Marja help support him only so he can give his full attention to their surroundings, and his tall dark body is tense and ready for an attack. He'd managed to keep his beltknife through the crash, and he keeps the hand not wrapped around Marja's shoulders near it at all times. Marja, for her part, is equally wary but not nearly as tense, only worried about Liandro. She knows her young friend will try to defend her if they're attacked, and the gash in his side will make it hard for him to run and endanger him in a fight. She's a good Healer, and she's confident that with some rest and food the gash will heal completely within a couple of sevendays, but she can't fight. Hopefully they won't run into anything. Although it increases the risk of running into a wild wherry or feline, they stay with the stream, not wanting to go too far from fresh water, until it abruptly ends in a spring bubbling up from the ground.

"We should probably stay near here for tonight, at least," Liandro says in his habitual soft murmur. "We don't want to go too far from fresh water, since we can't guarantee we'll find more close by, and it's a bit late in the day to be wandering about. If it gets dark, we might not be able to find our way back." Freeing himself from Marja's supporting shoulder, he begins to circle slowly, looking for a good place to make camp.

Since she knows next to nothing about wilderness survival, especially in a jungle, Marja just nods and lets the teenager make the decisions. As Liandro looks around, she straightens her medium-sized frame, inhales deeply, and takes a moment to appreciate her surroundings for their beauty instead of just the danger they might hold. As she does so, she hears a soft chirping nearby. "Liandro? Did you hear that?" she asks, cocking her head and brushing her wavy black hair back from her ears.

"No. Hear what?" he asks, glancing up.

The chirp comes again. "That. It sounds like a firelizard. And it's close by!" She begins to walk towards the sound, dark eyes alert with a curiousity that she's never in her twenty-five Turns yet learned to subdue.

"Marja, wait-" Seeing his plea fall on deaf ears, Liandro hurries after her, but his injured ribs makes keeping up with her extremely painful. He catches up with her just as she enters the small clearing where Martan sits. The youth's eyes go wide with surprise, and he reaches belatedly for his beltknife as he grabs at Marja's shoulder with the other hand. "Who are you?" he demands, his voice raised - which for Liandro means that it's even with a normal person's speaking voice.

"Don't be rude, Liandro," Marja scolds, although his tone had been far from offensive - only impolite. Reaching out behind her, the Healer grabs his wrist before he can fully draw his beltknife. She's not quite as wary as the teenager who's made himself her self-appointed bodyguard, but she's ready to turn and run if he proves to be a threat. She's met both good and bad among those made Holdless by the disasters, and has learned not to judge from appearances, while Liandro has had enough bad luck that he prefers to be wary of anyone not in a family group. Bestowing a friendly smile upon Martan, she strives to be as polite and inoffensive as possible. "Hello! I'm Marja, and this is my friend Liandro. Is this your island, or are there other people here?"
