Maybe to help the discussion, I'll share one early example. In the late 90s my future husband and I were dating and finishing college. I was home one afternoon with no classes and had a 90s talk show on the television, maybe Sally Jessie Raphael(?).

One of the topics was whether parents should use spanking. By the 90s, social sentiment, at least in the media was very anti-spanking. I didn't yet form an opinion but I watched. As those shows usually did, they had two experts who were "anti-spanking," and one who was called "pro-spanking."

What caught my attention wasn't the anti-spanking experts, but instead the "pro-spanking" expert, and her recommendations for how to give a spanking. She described quickly taking the child to a quiet place, telling them why they would be spanked, and then giving "two or three sharp swats to the seat of the pants." She went on to say it should never be with anything but the hand, and shouldn't really hurt, but should get their attention. My immediate thought was how silly that description of spanking really was.

More than anything else hearing that description of a spanking made me think about it. My future husband and I were already talking sometimes about our dreams of having kids, so after that show, I told him what they said and asked what his thoughts were. It was oddly comforting to hear him say he believed in good old fashioned spanking. Like my own experiences, he shared that he was spanked, with a paddle, and it was more than a few slaps with the hand. While we didn't make any such decisions then, I think our general feelings were shared, and that there is nothing wrong with loving parents giving a good spanking when needed.
