Moms, let’s talk about privacy when it comes to discipline. Do you believe in keeping things behind closed doors, or do you think a little humbling exposure helps the lesson sink in?

For me, with my girls, Lillian and Emily, I’ve always been an advocate of a little show. Nothing too dramatic, of course, but I do believe discipline should carry a certain weight—a sense that they’re accountable, not just to me, but to the household. So, their spankings usually happen in their own rooms, but with the door left open. No one sees, but let’s just say there’s no mystery about what’s happening. As for corner time? Well, a freshly spanked little bottom stands prettily at the end of the hallway, nose to the wall, where she isn’t exactly on display… but she’s certainly not hidden either. A few stolen glances from a passing sibling just add to the proper embarrassment.

Margaret, on the other hand, is much more private about it—probably because she often has the neighborhood boy, Kevin, in her house (she sits for him). When her Charlotte finds herself over her mother’s lap, it’s always behind a firmly shut door. Even corner time is kept in her room. She thinks it’s more dignified, but personally, I feel a little shared awareness never hurt anyone.

So, what’s your style, ladies? Do you close the door and keep it hush-hush? Or do you think a little background audience makes the lesson just that much more effective?
