That sounds amazing – it’s always nice to hear from other families who live the barefoot lifestyle! My two daughters, ages 9 and 13, have also been barefoot pretty much since they could walk, so I can definitely relate to what your kids are experiencing in Sydney.

In the summer here, they’re just like your two – totally unfazed by the baking hot ground. I’ll be hopping from shaded patch to shaded patch while they stroll happily along in the full sun, soles tough enough to handle it without a second thought. By the time we get home on those long summer days, their feet are often completely black from dust, asphalt, and whatever else they’ve picked up, and they always get a kick out of seeing just how dark they can get before it’s time to wash up.

Right now though, it’s winter for us, and it’s a completely different kind of challenge. The pavements are cold, often wet, and sometimes slick with frost, but my girls take it in stride. I think their years of barefoot living have built not just physical resilience in their soles, but also a mental toughness – they treat the cold as just another texture underfoot. They’re quick to notice changes in temperature or ground surface, and I’ve seen them instinctively adjust their pace or step to stay comfortable.

For them, going barefoot isn’t just about weather tolerance – it’s a way of life. Whether it’s the searing summer heat or the biting winter chill, they say it feels more natural and freeing than wearing shoes. And honestly, watching them move so confidently over every surface, season after season, makes me proud. It’s a reminder that our bodies adapt beautifully when given the chance.
