Pretty much yes, they don't particularly like gravel and now in spring there's still a lot of crushed grit on the roads from the winter. So they will walk on grass if they can.

Rain isn't much of a problem but makes your feet softer, making it a bit more difficult to walk on such rough and challenging surfaces. Though they're tougher than me ... I see how they get more cautious then.

As long as they run around, cold temperatures aren't that much of a problem at least while it's not freezing, so they can happily run around and play at +5°C, at least on dry ground. For fun our boy also loves to run around in snow, especially when it's just falling ... but that's just for a few minutes. Yes they have shoes (of the "minimal/barefoot" kind) to put on when it gets really cold.

>How do they keep their feet clean by walking barefoot?

Depending on where they walk their feet will get dirty or clean ... rain, puddles, grass can clean them again. Outside, we're not bothered by black soles (they don't get any dirtier than shoes). Fuzzled hair, bright smiles and dirty bare feet all go together as signs of kids having a marvellous day playing outside ... better not to be too picky there as parents. So much better than having lazy couch potatoes!
It's not serious anyway. When barefoot you have the option of rinsing your feet in a stream, fountain or puddle of water.

We do have a "clean feet" rule at home and the kids both agreed to that. So they wipe their feet as they come in and since the bathroom is just around the corner from the entrance door, will shower off their feet quickly, using a brush if necessary. That doesn't take any longer than washing hands.
