Of course, forcing them to be barefoot or allowing them to risk frostbite in the name of competition would be wrong, and I didn't mean to suggest that. What I meant to ask was whether you plan to buy them shoes even if their toes stay rosy pink on all but the coldest of winter days.

My own children had been going barefoot deeper and deeper into winter, until one year the only days that were too cold for them were those bitterly frigid ones when nobody ventures outside unless they have to. And even then, they would be fine for fifteen or twenty minutes at a time. The following year, we decided to let them live totally without footwear, as they had both made it very clear it was something they wanted to do. One of their christmas presents was getting to donate their last pairs of shoes (which they had never actually worn), and they couldn't have been happier about it.

As far as skiing goes, at that point my kids wouldn't have wanted to do anything they couldn't do barefoot, and probably would have been sad to pass over so much fresh snow without feeling any of it underfoot.
