At the risk of splitting hairs, two SIMMs with 512Kb each means 1024Kb total - but as long as you have the slots occupied, that's almost certainly not the problem.

My much earlier reference to the a/b edge connector was that someone found that one of the contacts on theirs had got damaged, and wasn't making good contact between board and wiring loom . It's hard to see, but worth checking.

Given that 575 boards are well under $20 on eBay, you could always invest in another one, just to help eliminate causes. Sod's law says that the video circuitry went bad in the middle of your modification!
