Some translations say purge the inmost being or purifies the heart.

The verse is talking about the consequence for the sin or behavior/crime, being stern enough that you avoid doing that thing in future.

It is talking too about how if you accept the pain associated with the discipline, it can purify the spirit. Going though something hard builds inner strength and resilience.

But oh yes, physically when mom disciplined me, I was quite a sensitive girl so I felt it deep down inside of me. She'd talk when younger about butterflies of guilt disappearing after discipline.

I always felt guilt over misbehavior quite deeply even to the point of it being physical, was hard on myself sometimes. She actually spoke about when it is more difficult to get through it has more meaning and lasting effect.

But she would discipline always on the bare bottom, hand, her hairbrush, or the paddle. was almost always a hand spanking before any implement. She punished soundly I will say that, but always comforted me afterwards and prayed with me.
