As a member of the older generation, I suppose I am qualified to comment on the generational differences.

It is true that in the past it was not uncommon to see a spanking in public. It was not an everyday occurrence but these instances were not surprising. Most parents it seemed did not put any stock into the “just wait until we get home” tactic.

There are few things more embarrassing than being made to bare your bottom in front of others. I can still vividly recall misbehaving at the doctor’s office and being taken out to the parking lot. Any pleading of “please not here!” was met with “well you should have thought about that before!”

As a parent I tried to avoid public spankings, but I will admit I pulled the car over on a few occasions on long road trips to give one or more spankings. The kids were always on their best behavior afterwards, even the unspanked ones!
