Subject: Dan Dozier

I had a multi-hour phone conversation with Dan Dozier a few days ago. Although I have had many such conversations with Vietnam Vets whom I have no recollection of ever knowing, with Dan I felt like I was reconnecting with an old and dear friend. I felt a great kinship with Dan as we both retraced our personal experiences which involved remembering details of some truly harrowing episodes of being under heavy fire, at Pleiku for Dan and at Ban Me Thuot for me.

Dan's memory of a gun position in between runways and another on the south perimeter helped to add detail to my recollections. In particular, his descriptions reminded me of that all-permeating dread and tension of being in close proximity to deadly threat and the deeply unsettling uncertainty that naturally arises when one attempts to reconcile the well-warranted feeling of being only nominally trained against an ill-defined, invisible and deadly threat that by its nature arrives with no warning.

However poorly prepared we Security Police were, the augmentee received only a fraction of the training we received. Although some augmentees were more or less permanently assigned to the Security Police role as I recall was the case with Terry (sorry Terry, I forgot your last name), a VSPA member who has often posted on this list and who seems to have been an example of this, most augmentees, like Dan, seem to have been assigned to scattered nights over some weeks and would never have become familiar the job enough to ever build much confidence.

Dan's AFSC was as part of the Civil Engineer Squadron working on air conditioning equipment which was essential for some of the equipment we depended on. Our Central Security Control by 1970 was air-conditioned and the "Ready Alert" room where I spent a few nights was air-conditioned. I am sure I have Dan to thank for those fabulous and rare, few nights of air-conditioned sleep!

I know that I did not survive without a scratch by my own wits, strength, and maturity. It was because of better men than me who did possess that greater strength and maturity who watched out for me. I know Dan was one of those men and I am deeply appreciative of his strength of character which came through at every moment in our conversation. Dan made a huge impression on me as just the kind of human being I want to see more of in this world. Dan served as a Defender of the Force and is a most welcome addition to our fraternity.
