Today, we’re celebrating Religious Freedom Day.

AND FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA."

Before his death, Thomas Jefferson left specific instructions for a monument to be constructed on his grave site. In reference to the words to be placed on his gravestone, Jefferson said, “On the faces of the Obelisk the following inscription, & not a word more.” He continued by writing, “because by these, as testimonials that I have lived, I wish most to be remembered.”

On this day, 232 years ago in 1786, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom was enacted by the Virginia General Assembly. This revolutionary document guaranteed all Virginians the freedom of, and from, religion — and became the precursor to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. It’s a powerful document that marks a pivotal moment in American history.

The Virginia Statute issues an uncompromising and powerful call for religious freedom, the words of which still ring true today. It reads in part:

“That our civil rights have no dependence on our religious opinions any more than our opinions in physics or geometry...Be it enacted by General Assembly that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of Religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge or affect their civil capacities.”

That’s why today, we’re celebrating Religious Freedom Day, which commemorates this pivotal moment in American history.
