Subject: FINAL GUARDMOUNT FOR KELLY BATEMAN, LIFE MEMBER #118, K9 UBON RTAFB, THAILAND 70-71

Kelly Bateman stood his final Guardmount yesterday morning on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022. He passed quietly in his sleep. Kelly was VSPA Life Member #118 and served in the 8th Security Police Squadron with K9 Baron at Ubon RTAFB, Thailand in 1970-71.

Kelly served as Historian of the VSPA for several years where his attention to detail provided a concise tracking and filing system of our personal history, as well as our squadron and VSPA organizational history.

As Historian, he and his wife Victoria made 37 guidons for our units when we marched in the largest formation in the parade on Constitution Avenue in 2007 when we were in Washington, D.C for the 25th Anniversary of The Wall. Kelly specifically marched on our perimeter with his German Shepherd, leading all of our K9 handlers as they once again protected the perimeter of our 400 member formation.

Kelly was an essential member of the K9 team of Terry Strickland, Ernie Childres and Bill Cummings who planned and personally built the memorial at Lackland AFB for K9 Nemo and his handler Robert Throneburg.

Kelly is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Warriors Medal of Valor. Please keep Victoria in your prayers. She has lost her husband while we have lost a another past member of the VSPA Board of Directors who was a devoted brother and friend.

Additional information and funeral arrangements are pending.
