...but I know Andrew does want to go so I'll reserve my opinion until then. Here's the scope though. More and more film makers are headed to little 'ol NZ to make their "movin' pictures ya know.... ;)" (as we all flip flop around in our jandals, chilly bins in hand, mouths agape with wonder that "they" are arrived on our humble doorstep and "they" will pay mega bucks for "us" to play dress up and stand around in the background of dem dere "movin' pictures" LMAO! (They make us lose the jandals first though, although if the costume is a long one some of us may have been heard to issue distictly flipping, flopping noises while walking to and from the set!)

No but seriously (and please forgive me - these silly moods just hit with no warning and I have no meds for them ;)....seriously the thing about NZ is that while it is tiny compared to other places it has a HUGE diversity of scenery - because it runs from north to south and covers a wide range of climatic conditions for its size. They filmed the movie "The Piano" at a beach that is probably a 20 minute drive from here (and a favourite of ours) - Karekare. It is a beautiful place that is ruled by nature and the tide that surges straight in off the Tasman ocean. It is (like most of our west coast beaches here) surrounded by natural, protected, rainforest that clings to the hills that guard the beaches and merg down into the sand bars and wide open stretches of beach. There are streams of fresh water that pour through the bush (our major water catchment area is in this area too so all the more reason to ensure that it all stays natural and unpolluted). The waterfalls are awesome, the hikes and tracks would have you believing that you are all alone in a world where it could be anytime in history (except right now!). That is one slice of NZ, that's the bit that I am most familiar with as I haven't traveled very much in recent years but as a child I was "forced" ;-) to travel all over with my parents (Dad is the type that if there is a road you are supposed to follow it - no matter what! LOL, I MISS that nowadays!). There are many places like that all over NZ, many places that the movie people have not even found out about yet. It is a feast waiting for them to find it and they are beginning to realise this BUT I hope it takes them just a little longer to find some of our special places because the tourists will follow no doubt and while that's wonderful for the economy.... I like my *secret* places and am picky who I share them with!

Anyway... enough, LOL. Ellie, glad you liked the movie and the scenery. I've heard it said that one of the biggest unexpected challanges to filming in NZ is the noise that the cicadas make, there is just no way to shut them up when they arrive in summer. I can hear them as I type but for me that is traditional NZ summer background noise and I just tune it out.... guess it doesn't quite fit with Lord Of The Rings though. LOL - I wonder how they got rid of it?

PS - I have seen my fair share of Aus too and I happen to know that you have some pretty stunning scenery going on, one day I'm going to take Andrew (who thinks there is nothing to see that will interest him in Aussie land) to explore the Great Barrier reef area. He has no idea what he's in for! I look forward to it, I have a cousin in the prawn boat industry over there. :) In fact - I can't wait!!! :)
