So I'm going to share for those of you that have similair interests. Here's a nice sounding body scrub for starters;

Citrus Body Scrub

3 tbsp of fresh ground sunflower seeds
3 tbsp of medium oatmeal
3 tbsp of flaked sea salt
3 tbsp of finely grated orange peel
3 drops of grapefruit essential oil

lidded glass jar
almond oil

Thoroughly mix all ingredients and store in the jar.

To use mix to a paste with some of the almond oil, apply paying particular attention to areas of hard dry skin and then rinse off.

Makes about 5 lots in total.

I wonder what "flaked" salt is though? Guess I'll just use a fine grained salt. I also wonder whether it will store all right (not go pongy), I know the sunflower seeds will since I have used them as part of a mixture I sometimes sprinkle on the dogs food but should the orange peel be dry first do you think? Plus I think I'd be careful that I didn't block the drain when rinsing off.... Andrew has enough to contend with when it gets plugged up with my long hair. ;)

Since we�d been talking about herbs and recipes and such -- Monika, 21:13:11 01/24/02 Thu (12.83.24.93)
I thought I�d put together a few of my favorite recipes that I thought some of you might enjoy. This first one is great for healing wounds and infections; I make a �batch� and keep it on hand at all times. It also works great for poison oak or ivy but needs to be diluted before you use it. (And yes it will sting) I use this for humans and fur-kids, as a disinfectant for all their cuts, scraps and general boo-boos.

MYRRH and GOLDENSEAL LINIMENT
1 ounce Myrrh powder
1 ounce Goldenseal powder
1 ounce Echinacea powder
� ounce cayenne powder
1 pint rubbing alcohol

Place the Herbs in a glass jar, pour the rubbing alcohol over them; make sure to completely cover them�then add about 2 or 3 inches more liquid, make sure to use a large enough jar because the herbs will swell as they soak up the alcohol, if they swell too much and aren�t �swimming� in it�just add more alcohol. Make sure your jar has a tight fitting lid, place it in a dark, warm place and let the herbs �macerate� for 4 to 6 weeks (at least, really the longer you let it macerate the better but 4 weeks is the minimum) I like to shake the jar every day, to make sure the herbs don�t all settle on the bottom. At the end of the 4 to 6 weeks, strain the herbs (I use cheesecloth) rebottle the liquid. Don�t forget to label and date your liniment, it will keep but there is nothing more frustrating then trying to guess what the heck that brown �stuff� in the jar is. ;-)

I�ll post another one in a day or so, if you have a particular need just let me know, you never know I just might have a recipe for it somewhere.

Just sitting here, it's late, I love it, for me this is peace and *me* time..... what's your favourite computer time? Do you like to listen to music while on the net? Right now I have kind of soppy soapy/love ballads playing, soon I'll go have a little cruise around, I have Lisa's Mac on my mind strongly tonight so I will probably be looking for more info on CM in Boxers. This is important to me, time for me to do what I want, help friends perhaps, take time to really absorb things. Bear with me here, as I said..... just rambling on but I do think it is important to take time for ourselves, not to feel guilt over that aspect of our lives. Okay.... I'm a big reader of science fiction, fantasy, etc novels. I;m a great believer in aloe vera and use it straight from the plant for cuts, wounds etc. Does any one know if there are any contra indications for aloe vera?
Also does anyone know of Culpeper's Complete Herbal. (the book that is)Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1664) studied at Cambrige Uni and became an apothecary, physician and astrolger. His book is a facinating historical treatise nd stands as a monument to botancical and medical science.
Of course the herbs are English herbs of the time, and the reading is pretty heavy going at times, but it's worth looking in to.

I've created a new chat room, this one is better than the one I had here last time in as much as it doesn't bring multiple adds and pop ups etc with it, I really hated that! BUT it is a MSN chatroom (which I've used before and from past experience they work great and are very user friendly) so it does require that you have either a hotmail email addy or passport to sign in. Sorry about that but it is the best option I feel. Please feel free to use it to chat if you feel in the mood for some live chat with friends. Don't be shy if you haven't used one before, they are a great way of talking without the phone bill that goes with telephone chat. :) It is an unlisted chatroom by the way so it is all for us, no weirdos allowed! ;-)

Easy Microwave Carrot Cake

2 cups of finely grated carrot
2 eggs
1 cup of sugar
3/4 cup of oil
1 tsp of vanilla
1 1/4 cups of flour
2 tsp of cinnamon
2 tsps of mixed spice
1 tsp of baking soda
1/2 a tsp of salt

Mix eggs, sugar, oil and vanilla in food processor till smooth. Add carrots and all other ingredients, make sure everything is combined but not overmixed. Turn mixture into a microwave ring pan, cover and microwave on high for about 9 minutes (till cake looks just dry and centre springs back, check it at around 8 minutes as microwaves vary). When cool turn it out and ice with lemon butter icing and garnish with chopped nuts (walnuts are nice. :)

Lemon butter icing (or frosting for my USA friends).

I Tbsp butter
1 1/2 Tbsp of lemon juice
1 1/2 cups of sifted icing sugar
optional - 1/2 a tsp of finely grated lemon rind

Place the butter, juice and rind (if used) in a bowl, microwave at high for 30 seconds (or until soft). Add icing sugar and mix with a knife till it's smooth and creamy. Spread on slightly warm (not hot) cake.

Marlene can another Grandma join you? Me too, have four children, one daughter, 3 sons, all grown now, plus 4 grandchildren, i girl, 3 boys. No, I'm not in the UK, I'm in Melbourne,Australia. I'm not working just now.. my job finished last Dec .I was there for 4 years. I'm a writer, so do some of that and am also involved in live theatre.

...childrens clothing and they always seem to have just what you want ...but... it's never in the right size, yet they always seem to have it in one size down and the next one up.....well...... that's kind of how I'm feeling today. Frustrated! I have spent most of today trying to get a head start on this coming years home schooling stuff for Daniel. Now that I have the computer back up and running I wanted to print out a bunch of lesson plans and revision sheets, stuff like that to be used over the year (or at least to take us through the first term). Although I teach in a pretty freestyle manner things like that are great for 'filling in the chinks' so to speak. Everything I found (and believe me I have sat here for hours and hours searching and scrolling) is either way out of his range or simply too young to be of any benefit for him. And here I thought it was just retail outlets that were out to get me and it turns out the internet likes to play the same silly game. :( Oh well, guess I'll just keep looking, there's gotto be good stuff for his age group out there some place!

Okay, Diane.. I write fiction mainly, short stories and poetry many of which have been published in anthologies of short stories, university magazines, local community mags etc. My stories are usually a little 'weird' in the fantasy, magic realism, or speculative fiction genres.
I also write some 'social justice' stuff.. animals often feature in my stories..often with unusual, if not- magical powers. I belong to 2 local writing groups, one that meets on Wed mornings, and one that meets twice monthly in the evenings. Also am the VP of another group, that covers all of Victoria, it's called 'The Victorian Federation of Community Writers" known in a most sinister manner as 'The Feds!"

Monika told me how to do it (although I'm still not positive of what it is 'really' called - smogging maybe, smugging?... sounds a bit passionate doesn't it *VBG* shhhhhh don't tell Andrew ;) Anyways, she (or rather her SO) does this thing using sage to clear out the house (she swears it clears insects too but the flies here don't seem to have caught on to the idea). I used lavender (could be where I went wrong in fact) as I already had a big enough bunch dried to make my 'smogging wand'. I can tell you that it *does* have an effect on Boxers (makes 'em sneeze LOL, and think Mum has gone nutty too I'm sure), and it smells okay..... really does smoke. And that (unlike someone I won't mention) the fire department did *not* come knocking on my door! ;-) I think today I'll pick up some more frankencense incense though...... I may have to leave future smogging till I have some nice dry sage. :)

What sort of Christmas day did everyone have? Did you enjoy it? Did you go the entire family route or maybe just a quiet one, did you do the traditional Christmas pig out, too full, must lie down NOW thing or something altogether different this time. Marlene, did you make those yorkshire puds? I missed out on hearing about Thanksgiving for you guys too (did I mention that I stuffed the date of TG up so we celebrated it three times kinda, sorta... LMAO!) (It was Kris's fault BTW ;) hee, hee. Our Christmas was a quiet one, we didn't eat breakfast till lunch time then we went out to walk it off, did a bush/beach walk which was lovely. Came home and cooked a nice barbaque and tried to convince ourselves (not too sucessfully) that we really *did* want all that extra food, LOL. I got a copy of Diana Gabaldons latest novel (if they hadn't got it for me their lives would have been distinctly miserable for sure!) and a few other small things but I was emphatic that we were not going to spend too much this year and we did all behave pretty well. (Harder to do with a child of course but even there we managed not too badily). So that was pretty much mine, and I was thinking of you all, and missing you, and sending good thoughts your way. How 'bout yours?

...aerial spraying in an attempt to control a specific pest? Apparently we are about to be dumped on from up above with some insecticide in an attempt to limit the spread of one wee beasty known as the "painted apple moth". I am not happy about this, they are saying that there will be no likely health consequences (and this is just for humans, pet health has not been addressed in the slightest) at all BUT they will set up hotlines for medical questions and possible problems ....however (always with the Big But!) they will not provide monetary rummineration in the form of medical care should it cause any health problems. (Talk about cover their bases!) :( There's to be a public meeting about it (letter arrived today) I think either Andrew or I should get ourselves along there and see what's what!

Anyone ever had to deal with anything like this? If so did you take any action? Note any consequences? I'm worried about our birds (budgies in outdoor avairy) too.... the dogs and people can stay indoors but not the birds. And my herbs and vegetables...??? Will it effect them I wonder?

Get ready for a long one people (Halloooo? Anyone out there??). A few of you know that I've had problems getting my in-laws to learn about Colleen's diabetes care. Oh, they listen, but it goes in one ear and out the other. The Sunday before last we had a bad day. Colleen wandered off while Dad was watching her. I came home and found her in the bathroom. Poor kid had been 47 and not only didn't he notice she wandered off, but he also thought she was faking. Really got mad at her. Anyway, I helped her to the dining room and made him hold her in the chair while I got the glucose gel, juice and various other things. He finally realized that it was serious when he saw my hands shaking. I have to give him credit for trying to help. While I was rubbing the glucose gel on her cheeks he was giving her juice. The problem was that he was filling her mouth full and she was terrified because she wasn't capable of swallowing it. Very dangerous as she could have choked. I sat down with him that night and reminded him that it's almost seven years since she was diagnosed (Dec. 17th, 1994). If the family hasn't learned in seven years how to take care of her then I figure they're not going to do it. Makes me furious! Anyway, I decided that the only person I could really trust to take care of her is herself.

The first thing we did was let her run high for about four days. She has hypoglycemic unawareness which means she doesn't recognize the symptoms of a low. The only way to fix that is to raise the numbers and then drop her back down abruptly. Not fun for anyone, but it seemed to help a little. Then we worked on drawing up insulin and giving shots. She's not quite coordinated enough to mix the two types of insulin in the same syringe, but......since Sunday morning she's been drawing up the first part of the shot and injecting herself. You can't imagine what a huge step this is for her. It means freedom and independence. Soon she'll be able to spend the night at a friend's house and I won't have to drive over at 6am. I'm just so pleased I could burst! Please, someone, remind me of how proud I was of her when she hits those teen years and decides she needs to lose weight and stops taking her shots. For now I'll just bask in the glow of her achievement (and she's as thrilled as I am).

Does anyone know how to make the drink sangria? it's based on red wine with citrus juices and... not quite sure what else.. but I read about it somewhere and would like to give it a go. OK, really had to make a tough choice and trust me, it was agonizing. I have been dwelling on this for over a year now and have talked with various people who either are social workers, teachers, police, etc., about how to handle this. All without mentioning a name...

I had a welfare check done on a friend of mine after my last visit to her house and I saw that things had not changed.

We have know each other for years and honestly, she cannot keep house. Filth and clutter and often you could walk from one side of a room to another without touching the ground.

I often saw food on the floor and often odd smells and cat box odors. Sometimes halls and doorways were blocked.

When she had ferrets their litter tray was overflowing onto the cage floor and out onto the floor of the house. Her cats were often late for inoculations (rabies is mandated by law in most states now).

She always had an excuse and I felt assured since she seemed aware of the filth, she would take care of it. Then I moved away. But things worsened each time I visited...

Last year, she called me a few times saying her husband had assaulted her and she needed help, I gave her places to turn to and a game plan for getting out. She stayed and insisted things are better. But I have heard her husband behind her sometimes when I called and he is still the same ass he was - so I doubt the hitting and threats have totally stopped without some form of intervention.
And whan I broached the subject, she evaded it. Typical for an abused person. (My Brother in law is a Psychiatrist and I have know several abused girlfriends and they either evade the subject or deny it).

Her children were often grubby when I saw them unless they were going out and my friend told me in a few occasions the kids get bathed weekly give or take. Her son developed an infection under his foreskin (uncircumcised). I come from a medically oriented family and this just does not happen overnight and often is due to lack of proper hygiene. When I asked why she did not clean him properly and start teaching him hwo to care for it, she said she was embarrassed. When I asked about her husband, she said he was too uncomfortable - well dang, then the child should have been circumcised! Screw the Earth Mother crap if you are not going to properly care for your child's anatomy! I have cared for uncircumcised toddlers and yes, there is proper hygeine that needs to be followed. There were also other issues of health that concerned me as well with both kids.

Last visit, the house was worse than I have ever seen it - just less animals. And it was dangerous. Yes the kids were clean but also her in-laws were due over (in-laws "hate" her and really come down on her husband).

Also, the woman has a zillion activities she is doing from D&D to her coven to her magazine to her apprentice to her crafts to her organizing PP days and friends and teaching and writing, etc and often complains about her kids and how she cannot do what she wants. But then when you ask her about things, she denies them. When she asks for advice, she never takes it. She wants to compalin and whine but not take the initiative to improve life. Typical behavior for a person in her situation. Also when past friends have confronted her, she has cut ties and said these people have it in for her... Maybe they were just concerned and did not know what else to do... So they confronetd her. Maybe they really cared about their health and welfare.

Heck even one landlord claimed part of their not renewing the lease was due to the cat box odors! Of course, she denied it but always had an excuse why the box was overflowing. Maybe her filth also explained the bug problems they have had in the past...

Well, I could not stand by and see the house and life worsening and the danger. She said things were cluttered but better, they were worse and she lives in a larger place now! So I called to have a welfare check done - and of course, someone slipped and let my name leak when I was supposed to remain anonymous...

Well, the social worker said that it was good I made the call, the house was bad and not safe and though my friend insisted it was because her son had been ill and had his appendix out, the worker could tell that this was not a week of not being able to work on the house (friend is an at home mom in theory yet has not time to care for the house and both of her kids go to school at least part time). Anyhow, I was told that there was at least a year of clutter and mess (they had moved to this house about a year ago). The call was justified and the worker is concerned about the situation at the house.

Trust me, I have just touched on the issues here...

But, the family somehow tracked the call down and as you can imagine, are very pissed. I know we are told to harm none but sometimes doing what you know is right causes pain... I have lost a friend. But she was not seeking help and always griping but never acting. I could not sit by for another five years and watch things deteriorate. I mean, last time my son was at a place they lived, he STUCK to the floor while crawling across the linoleum. And my friend laughed it off and said she did not get to mop yet - well this was child could not crawl well due to the filth. Needless to say, my son never went to any place they lived again. And the filth continued...

They also lost a pet due to neglect (they forgot to feed it) and then told the social worker it was a respiratory infection. Not what she told me as she was close to tears...

Anyhow, sometimes doing what is right will harm feelings. But when someone truly needs an intervention when they are a hazard, please do so. It is not harming more to ignore it???

Welcome to one of the grey areas of our religion...

I called because I CARED not because I wanted to do something malicious. I tried for years and got nowhere and they need help. Who would I have harmed if I sat back ond ignored it? Sometimes caring means hurting in order for help to be gotten.

I am sorry only that she cannot see this and not for what I did. I am sorry that she could not seek the help she needed herself and was putting health and safety second to her selfish needs all in the name of religion... I hope that someday she can see that I cared enough to risk our relationship just to ensure that the family got the help she needed. Had I not cared, I would not have remained by her for five years and a long move. I would have let the friendship die.

It hurts to care...

My husband got a call from the FBI yesterday. They were looking for semen or frozen embryos from a couple that dies in the Pentagon crash.
For those of you who do not know, my husband works in reproductive medicine and is an IVF/Andrology lab supervisor (certified).
He checked records and there is nothing from the couple in the lab. But the couple was one of the first patients he worked with after we moved to the Washington DC area and he was the embryologist who did their case. He was the embryologist on during the retrieval as well as the transplanting of embryos. He basicallu created their twin daughters. The whole family was lost in the crash. The MDs do the retrievals and the actual transplants but the taking of the eggs, insemination and getting them set for transplanting is done by the embryologists. Doug is the first "babysitter" an infertile couple will have.

Doug feels a bond with every child he helps a couple conceive and said this was a really nice family.

But since they used a fresh semen sample and there were not enough embryos to freeze some - they have nothing at the lab the FBI could use to help identify the remains.

This has really hit...

Well, I am off in a coupel days to visit the folks while DOug refinished hardwood floors... Scary....

Sorry if anyone was using it, I couldn't get the board to load with the problems that I've been having with my computer so for now at least I have removed it. Maybe I'll reintroduce another one at some future date when it doesn't cause me to crash everytime I try and load the board.

Has anyone got any easy recipies for pumpkins. Remember I can't stand for long so they have to be very easy.

I have always wondered what pumpkins taste like but not been able to cook them before.

On September 11, 2001, our Nation was rocked by a great act of terrorism.
Near the end of morning rush hour in New York City and Washington DC, planes struck both the tallest towers in the World Trade Center complex and the Pentagon, a fourth plane went down in a relatively rural section of Pennsylvania - its path diverted from its intended target.
Living very close to the Pentagon and with a husband that works within walking distance of it and within a few blocks on the White House, this was far too close. Many families I know locally through my son�s preschool and toddler playgroup are military and some have relatives and spouses who work at the Pentagon. The WTC complex was the destination of tens of thousands of employees and thousands of tourists each day.
However, not only are we dealing with the immediate and horrendous task of praying we can find more survivors, but also the daunting task to recover possibly thousands of dead - then the clean up.
This tragedy will impact us for a long time. Blood supplies are being severely drained and groups such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army are being taxed to their limits.
There are few feelings worse than wanting to help but not being able to get in and help pull rubble off of the trapped or finding a body to give some form of closure to a family. However, everyone can help in various ways.

I think our fall months are going to be pretty hectic around here and today I started thinking about Christmas. If I have dinner at my home I think I might have Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding. I have only done it a few times in the past and I use a recipe for Popovers - does that sound right? But my *BIG* question is about the drippings in the roast beef pan...........the way I have learned to make the pudding is to make it in the pan the roast was done it - using all those lovely drippings. It *is* yummy that way, but I sacrifice all the good stuff I would use to make a rich brown gravy to go with the roast.
Do you do it that way? What about using another pan and using browned butter for the "drippings" in which to bake the pudding?

We were soooo young. It was my second marriage, his first. I had been abandoned by my first husband with an 18 month old daughter. He walked away from us in the middle of the night on Valentines Day.....

But then I met this cute, tall, brand-new policeman. I was working two jobs - one was at night selling tickets at an art-house movie theatre. I sold him a ticket.....he was with a date! But then he came back the next night and asked me if I'd like to go out sometime.

Our first "date" was after I finished that second job, it was late, we went out to a "drive-in" for a hamburger and a chocolate shake. He took me past my sister's house where I picked up my little girl, took me home, left me at my doorstep with a sweet kiss. We were married about 1 1/2 years later.

On the day of our ceremony (a depressing affair at city hall - I wore a red suit and scandalized my new MIL) he had been without sleep for 2 days. The Hell's Angels had come to town, and all shifts of policeman were on stand-by and days off cancelled. He was a zombie, but we went out to dinner after our "I do's" with his parents, went and picked up "our" little girl and went home to our tiny apartment. We didn't have a honeymoon - both went back to work the next day.

He is a wonderful, kind man who is always a gentlemen. He has loved me, raised another man's child as well as our own and come home every night. He is a steady man, you can count on - beloved by two daughters and now 3 more little girls.

I love you, Big Guy.
