  Best tips for dealing with stress. I'm sure we all have some.
  
  Depending on what it is I do some of these;
  
  Rescue Remady is helpful for short term stress that comes on suddenly,
  Deep breathing is basic and something that is easy to forget about - it helps refocus things.
  Look for tension in your body - scrunch up your shoulders for example and then concentrate on totally relaxing them - it can be really surprising how much tension we carry around in our bodies nearly all day long.
  Burn calming essential oils - lavender, neroli, chamomile, rose are a few examples.
  Put on soothing music and take a warm bath or soak in a hot tub.
  Drink calming herbal teas - lemon balm, chamomile or linden (lime tree) is supposed to be good too (I haven't tried that one myself yet).
  Valerian (herbal) tablets or capsules can help get over the worst bits of stress (also good for some muscular aches and pains - tension pain and can aid a little in dealing with migrains).
  Refocus on the positives in life - it's a "Look at all the pretty flowers in the garden and ignore the weeds" approach.
  Hug a dog, hug a child, hug someone you love who cares about you - let them be there for you.
  Talk. That's the simpilest and best way to deal with a lot of different stresses - just get it out and talk about it. That can help more than anything else.
  Last one I think - get away from the source of the problem to somewhere that you're less likely to focus on it for a few hours. Go for a walk in a park, a picnic by a stream, shell collecting at a beach or visit a muesem - just adjust the pace and where your heads at for a little bit of time. Give yourself a little space.

  Well guys, I may have gotten too excited too quickly about the house. Although we were pre-approved for the loan, we've been informed that we need to come up with an additional $10,000. Because we haven't sold our current home they want to see that we're able to make two mortgage payments for six months. Kind of a big glitch since we don't have the $. Hopefully we can get it from Matt's sister and let it gather dust in our savings account for a while. I've been worrying so much that I'm giving myself a migraine and I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it. I have been reading the boards, but just can't seem to concentrate enough to post. Just a little down now, but I'm sure it will all work out for the best. All of you that need it are in my thoughts and prayers even if I don't post it.

  Bill has had another fall this evening and is now in hospital because he has
  badly broused his arm and leg. He is on warfarin and his blood is kept
  quite thin. Apart from that he is OK, just shaken.

  Stress in horses comes out in many ways, and if you compare them with
  other animals kept in artificial conditions like zoos, you see the same
  symptoms in animals there.
  
  Weaving:- This is where the horse rocks from side to side when in the
  stable. His head is usually swinging as well, but not always. This
  damages the front legs because of the constant unnatural movement. We
  see this form in other animals, mainly in zoos, and is usually caused by
  boredom but can be learnt from other animals.
  
  Box walking:- The horse walks round and round the stable, again this is
  seen in mainly zoos when animals walk round their cages. Boredom is
  usually the cause.
  
  Crib biting:- The horse gets hold of an item with his teeth usually the top of
  the door or the manger, and just continually scraped his teeth on it. Can
  be picked up watching another horse.
  
  Wind sucking:- This is a progression from crib biting, When the horse
  holds onto the door or manger with his teeth he also sucks in air. Both this
  and crib biting damages the teeth and makes if very difficult to age a
  horse. Also the horse looses condition and develops the muscles under
  his belly which makes him look odd.
  
  Pawing the ground:- Damages the floor, usually ends up with a big hole
  which I can garentee I will fall down. Also can damage the leg.
  
  All these can be seen in other animals that are stressed. How many dogs
  do we know who pace around their kennels or runs because they are shut
  in with very little human or canine contact or exercise.

  ...and maybe there are a few others that I don't know about so I have a question to throw out to you all. Fran on the Backyard/Working Breeds dog chat board mentioned this - Raindrop Therapy. Apparently it is an essential oil therapy good for the back and legs. I would love to know if anyone here has heard of or used this therapy and if so - what is it and does it work well!!??? (Fran hasen't posted back just yet and she may miss the question since it's further down the board). I would love to have this info to pass on to Jen (for Barney) and for myself and a few other people as well.
  
  Any clues anyone? Or any other good back/joint/muscle rub blends? Heck .... lets be done with it and say - anyone that's into essentials or interested in them at all -post your thoughs HERE. LOL.

  Southern Bourbon Pecan Pie
  
  6 large eggs, separated
  2 c light corn syrup
  2t vanilla extract
  2c packed dark brown sugar
  4T melted butter
  1c pecan or walnut halves
  1/4 cup Kentucky Bourbon
  2-9 inch unbaked deep dish pie shells
  
  1. Prehat oven to 400 degrees F.
  
  2. In medium bowl beat eggs yolks slightly. Add corn syrup, vanilla, brown sugar and butter; mix well. Stir in bourbon and nuts. In a separate bowl beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gently fold rest of pie mixture into egg whites [makes the pie lighter and less dense]. Pour mixture into unbaked pie shells.
  
  3. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake an additional 30-35 minutes or until outer edge seems set.
  
  4. Let cool completely on wire rack. Just before serving decorate around edge with rosettes of whipped cream.
  
  
  Butterscotch Pie [Granny Banner's favorite pie recipe]
  
  4 large eggs
  4c whole milk
  1/3 c cornstarch or arrowroot powder
  1 lb dark brown sugar
  1 stick real butter
  
  Mix all together in top of a double broiler. Cook until thick. Pour into two pre-baked 9-inch pie shells. Cool. Serve with whipped cream. Very rich. If desired separate 2 of the eggs and top with meringue after baking pie. Return pie to over broiler long enough to brown meringue.

  But I'm very excited. The Art Institute of Chicago is going to have an exhibit of Van Gogh and Gauguin. Tickets are $10 and I'm trying to find someone to go with me. So....anyone want to come??? I'm buying....The Art Institute is one of my favorite places. I had dreamed of going to school there, but it takes a special type of talent - one which I knew early on I didn't possess.   For those of you that don't know, Colleen is eight years old (nine in October). She's a very bright girl, been reading since she was three and finished Moby Dick, Great Expectations and David Copperfield in first grade. (I'm not bragging, just giving you an idea of the level of her reading and comprehension.) I've caught her twice now with several of my books. One was about the Romanov family (Tsar Nicholas), one a book on mythology and the other was Anne Frank. Now, I've never taken her to task for reading other things that were beyond her level. She's comprehended everything and we discuss each thing she reads. I've been told that each of these books are inappropriate. The first because the royal family was executed (she knew that, we had discussed it), the second because it's doesn't coincide with her Catholic school teachings, the last because it deals with Nazi Germany. The only one that I have a problem with is Anne Frank as I recall some discussion of her budding sexuality (and the entire subject is disturbing), although I did read it for the first time when I was ten. What do you think? If she is able to handle these subjects intellectually and emotionally, is it right to forbid her to read them? Would you allow your daughter to read these things? I would appreciate thoughts on this, and please be honest.

  Today was beautiful here!!! Finally!!! A nice autumn day (Fall for all you USA types, LOL). It was also the last day of Daniel's membership to Friends Of The Zoo here (till I rejoin him that is). So we packed up and went to the zoo for the afternoon. :) A very nice zoo we have with innovative ideas re. enclosures and breeding programmes for endangered species. :) I wore a deep green top. Hee, hee, hee.... I didn't think about it at all but that's the colour the keepers wear!!!!
  
  Daniel was SOOOOOO impressed - everywhere we went the animals came up to the borders of their enclosures to greet me!!!!!! It took us a little to figure it out. ;-) The sealions in particular were funny - I think I could have got them to go through their regime that the keepers use to check fins, teeth and the such for me!!!! Too funny!!!
  
  I'm very proud of our zoo here - they've moved well beyond animal exhibits to rare and endangered species protection and breeding and interesting enclosurers with the animals interests at the foremost. How does everyone else feel about their local zoos?

  I would love to get some new recipes for food that is easy, quick and contains simple ingredients.
  I'll share a favorite one (not a main dish, but a potato side dish or accompaniment).
  
  "SMASHED POTATOES"
  
  Use small red or new potatoes - about the size of a golf ball or a little larger. Prick and cook in the microwave until done. Leave the skins on.
  Place on a cuttingboard and flatten into a pattie with a flat spatula.
  Heat a non-stick pan with just a little oil and quickly fry smashed potato on both sides, seasoning with a little salt and pepper.
  
  They are crispy and salty on the outside and creamy and moist inside. I serve with anything you might use french fries or hashbrowns for - steak, lambchops, eggs, ham. They are pretty low-cal as potatoes go....no butter, sour cream or gravy, and they don't soak up a lot of oil while cooking like hashbrowns can do, (I guess because the skin is still on.)
  
  I stole this from "Martha".........only she smashed it with an antique french copper saute pan and she topped it with sour cream and caviar!
  
  They are really good for a brunch side dish to eggs....top with a dollop of sour cream and bacon bits and minced green onions. (of course....then they are not low-cal!)
