It's a little like Independance day in the States I think, or Australia day in Aus? Hope I've got those right. It's the day that the Treaty Of Waitangi was signed between the Maori and British which essentially placed NZ under British rule and protection. There's loads of conflict about it here in NZ, has been for years but in a very simple nut shell that's what it is. More importantly (from the average working persons perspective) it's one of our annual public holidays. :)
