I'll just tell you that the testing for Diabetes is a good idea, but don't get too upset about it. If he tests high (the range has changed to over 120 fasting, normal is 70-120) then his would more than likely be diet and exercise controlled. Usually they try that first before going to oral meds.

I've got quite a few diabetic cookbooks. Not that you need them right now, but most of these recipes are low-fat, low-cholesterol. If you let me know the types of foods he prefers to eat maybe I can come up with some appetizing recipes for you. Let me know.

Are you watching his sodium intake as well? I wondered because you mentioned salt-free pretzels. I've been told by people that are life time member of weight watchers that it's the crunchy snacks that satisfy you the most. One other thing....please do not consider the Atkins diet. Many people boast of losing weight rapidly on the no carb diet and they do - but it's horribly unhealthy for the body. It works because without the carbohydrates the body begins to break down the fats for fuel. The by-product of this is that ketones (acetone) are secreted in the urine. You pee more because you need to eliminate the ketones, you need to drink more to avoid becoming dehydrated and it can be damaging to the organs of the body, not to mention that it can cause nausea and a general ill feeling. That's one of the main ways diabetic teenage girls lose weight - they stop eating and taking insulin so they pass ketones and lose weight. Granted, it's a more serious issue for them but I still can't imagine it being a healthy way to lose weight. Can you tell I have issues with the Atkins diet??

Let me know if you'd like me to look up some recipes for you. I have most of today free and it would be a good excuse to unpack that particular box of books.
