In reply to: Marlene 's message, "Can one of you explain "Boxing Day?"" on 09:21:55 01/18/02 Fri

...I'll tell it from my perspective here in NZ. It's the 26th of December which is a public holiday here which is always reffered to as 'Boxing Day'. I belive that it has its origins in sport, may still do (Margaret?) in the UK but here in NZ it is more that it is a holiday to be tacked onto Christmas day making it a two day break for those that have to work over the Christmas period. That's the real difference though because when I say "the Christmas period" what I actually mean here in the southern hemisphere, where summer is trying very hard to happen, I mean at least two weeks off work for most people beginning with Christmas day and Boxing day usually (not this year though as most places shut on the Friday so that the 24th being as Monday was part of the holidays. This is when most of NZ (those that can) take their holidays, it is when our schools are closed for their longest break (some of December and most of January) and, as a nation, we flock to fill camping grounds, head away on boating holidays, eat to many barbeques, drink too much beer ;) and generally make the most of the whole holiday concept. It's rather nice actually if, as I said, the rain ever decides to abate.
