most of the tinctures I have made so far have been for the dogs so are probably better as vinegar based for all the reasons that you have laid out above and also I don't make large amounts so don't expect a long shelf life from them.

I find a good dose of cayenne (or chilli) to often be an excellent preventative right at the beginning of bugs that start with sore throats and generally feeling grotty so I can certainly see how the linament would help banish the nasties! Thanks so much for all the above info, I like to understand things properly. :) I'm looking forward to hearing more like this, you don't mind the questions do you? Sometimes it is the finer points that get confusing when you are trying to feel your way with things like this.
