I admire the gardens in magazines and on TV that have lots of "Shabby Chic" items in them - I just have been afraid, if I did it - it would just look shabby! I'm not very artistic.
How well I remember our last drought. People were hooking up their washing machine drain hoses to collect the water or run it right outside onto landscaping. You could get a ticket if caught watering on any day other than your designated one. It was illegal to wash cars or driveways and patios. Our mantra was "If it's brown - flush it down. If it's yellow - let it mellow" We put a plug in the drain when showering and used that water to flush and also to water outside. It was a badge of "good citizenship" to have a brown lawn.
It certainly makes you aware of what it must have been like to live without central plumbing.
