My mother smoked (everyone did in those days) and I used to sneak a puff off her Kools when I was little.
My mother was born in 1910, on the prarie and had lots of stories to tell, like riding a horse to school, burning cow chips (dung) for heat, putting hot rocks in bed before climbing in....it was so cold.
Thinking back......I'm sure she didn't want me to become a smoker.......and one of the things she told me was that when she was little.........she smoked coffee rolled up in toilet paper. So..........of course we (the girl next door and I) had to try it. Mama never saw me do it, but I still remember trying to get ground coffee rolled into toilet paper and the tast of the paper and the smell and the taste of burning coffee grounds.
I did go on to "playing" with smoking in my teens and early twenties - but never became hooked, never did it regularly.
