Pinging is kind of hard to explain...

Imagine you are trying to measure distance by yelling across a gorge. Your echo, or the sound wave, or your vioce is like the ping, but a ping is in the form of data. It is basically just a software that measures the distance and time it takes for your "ping" to get from you, to another connection on another computer.

Faye, if I wanted to, I could find out what ISP (Internet Service Provider LOL!) you were using and how long it takes me to pull up your website just by using this software and typing both of our IP addresses in. That is how you can tell where your ISP gets their connection from by pinging through to them, finding out who they are with and pinging through to them. It tells you how many 'stops' the connection has to go through to get to it's final destination.
