It's true we can't be sure what programs might obsess us at some future date, but right here, right now I have to say I sincerely hope I'm never that obsessed again.

According to my very old Webster's dictionary an archaic meaning of "obsess" is "harass". As I became increasing upset and dejected by the change in direction the XFiles had taken in it's last few years, and how the myth had become an incomprehensible mess I realized I felt tired, worried, and worst of all, annoyed by the program, i.e. harassed (as used in this context). I felt the burden of my obsession and I didn't like it at all, in fact I began to look forward to the day when the XFiles would be finished. I really did- isn't that sad. I guess I thought the end of the series would help end the obsession I wanted to be rid of.. I realize all of you here are still in love with the XFiles, so in no way do I intend for that statement to be directed in a negative way towards anyone; it's only my pov.

I have only been this obsessed with one other tv program, and that was many, many years ago before VCR's and alternate stations such as FX to air the program again. An episode was viewed once, twice if you were lucky to catch it in the summer reruns, and that was that. Gone. Kaput. In those days obsession such as this was more frantic - and lonely. No message boards, no email, no one to discuss your obsession with except family and friends or co-workers, of which none were obsessed with the same program I was. There were "fanzines", which were the message boards and fanfic of that time but the issues were few and far between, and I'm talking YEARS, here. I remember quite well the burden of that obsession too, and the feeling of loss when the program was gone. No, I don't want to ever be obsessed with a tv program again.

Having said "no" I don't want to be obsessed with a tv program again, ( ;) ) I almost did so with Farscape. My goodness, but this program was like none other I had seen! I jumped into it during the second year - "rebounding", perhaps (?) and had much fun backtracking to find out what I had missed. Years 2 and 3 were simply wonderfully entertaining. This year though, in year four, I have become embarrassed to admit I watch it. Never have I seen a program self-destruct so quickly as Farscape. Ok ok, for those that still enjoy it, let me rephrase that so to not offend anyone to, 'I found I wasn't interested in the change of direction and focus the program as taken in season 4'. So it has become a major disappointment and, whew! all chances of becoming an obsession are gone, as well.

"Monk" shows promise of becoming a habit..., check it out- it's new and different. It stars Tony Shalhoub, who was in the XFiles episode, "Softlight". But I won't become obsessed with it/him. No, I won't!

CSI solidly has my attention, and I look forward to it each week; I can't wait on the spin-off, "CSI: Miami" this fall. However, I have to wonder if the writers can keep up with the same quality scripts as they have in the past, and I won't be a bit surprised if the program begins to flounder. For a program that focuses on theme and story and style more so than on the characters themselves ( except for their working relationship together ) a telling sign that the writers' well is beginning to dry up is when they start focusing more on the characters themselves, as we saw in the finale that was a cliffhanger with the mystery of Grissom dealing with impending deafness. Uh-oh. But am I obsessed with this program? No. I just enjoy it. Immensely. Am I obsessed with Grissom...and Catherine...and Sarah....er, ehm, NO! arrgghhh!!! I "just" like the storytelling..

Anyone remember the short-lived "Cupid"? Ohboy, I just might could have obsessed over that program! Heh!

I enjoyed your post, Islandgirl. Nice topic.
Chantal
