I think "X-Files, the Next Generation" (as I refer to seasons eight and nine)has been given much more of a "chance" than "The X-Files" was given during its first two seasons.
Let's remember that XF, a show aimed at the 18-35 age group (although a lot of us here ignore that!)originally aired on Friday nights; a move which makes zero sense in terms of attracting its target audience, as those people tend to be out - on dates or whatever - on Friday nights. It was also give relatively little promotion by the Fox execs. Yet, somehow (maybe due to superb writing and acting and some killer chemistry between its leads??) the show managed to thrive and become a hit.
The current version of XF has been given *the* cushiest timeslot Fox has to offer: on Sunday nights (the night when, statistically, people are most likely to be home watching TV) and following the networks two biggest hits, "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle". They have also promoted it out the wahzoo, by airing approximately 8 million promos for it during the World Series.
So, basically, if the show can't crack the top 50 under these conditions, I think it indicates inherent problems with the show, not the fact that it hasn't been given "a chance".
I'm not as jubilant about this as some of you might expect. I *REALLY* wanted XF as to end as a TV show at the end of either season seven or eight. Since it didn't, I kind of feel like it's pretty immaterial whether it ends at end of season nine or goes on to a tenth season; IMHO, the damage has already been done.
