Subject: KS watches the townspeople from a bench in the park

Putting one foot on top of the opposite knee, KS leans into the splintery back of the bench and tips her sunglasses down her nose. She chortles as she watches Kande and the Mayor debate over entering the local DVD store.

Suddenly, a shadow falls over the lean assassin.

"What are you doing?" Stardoe squeaks at her. Stardoe's hand hovers protectively over her holster.

KS grins to herself and waves her hand. "Nothing. Just taking in the view."

Stardoe crouches and her eyes dart back and forth. "The view of what? Are you on a stakeout?"

"Sheesh, relax, will ya? I'm just taking in the sun and watching everybody shop."

Stardoe sits down gingerly next to KS and looks towards the shops across the street. KS is right; there is an extraordinary number of Shippervillians out shopping today.

"I wonder why everybody is out in such numbers," the intrepid Sheriff muses to herself. Out loud she says, "Is there a storm coming?"

"Nope."

"Are people expecting visitors?"

"Not that I'm aware of."

"Some weird American or Canadian holiday?"

KS looks at her and gives her a mirthless grin. "Only the most important day of the year."

Stardoe looks puzzled, then her brow clears and a look of horror replaces the puzzlement. "You mean...!"

KS leans back and tilts her hat over her eyes. "That's exactly what I mean. You better get crackin'."

Stardoe leaps over a young girl and her dog in an effort to make it to the shops before KS does something horrible to her. How could she have forgotten? Thank God she still has 11 days to prepare.

Behind her on the bench, KS gives a tsk. "How could Stardoe have forgotten my birthday is coming? It's only the most important event on the horizon."
