Totally agree!! One only has to look at the way both ratings and criticial acclaim for the show have nosedived in the past couple of years to realize that what made the show a hit, both with viewers and critics, was never the "scary stories" aspect of XF; it was the creation of two *wonderful* characters whose growing trust, friendship and eventual love for each other drew viewers to watch their interaction week after week.
I'll also agree that if they absolutely *had* to do an eighth and ninth season of XF, it would have been better to cut the whole Mulder/Scully/William family loose in one fell swoop and do an "X-Files: the Next Generation" type deal with the TV shows totally focused on Doggett and Reyes, while saving Mulder and Scully for the movies.
BTW, I'm assuming that future XF movies will be Mulder/Scully only, which is another good reason for making the TV finale heavy on those two.
