Red-whirling eyes fixed on the tip of Massath’s tail, all Scarth could do at this early stage in the flight was try and follow her movements exactly. There would be time in a few moments for being cunning, or trying to dodge, but right now he had to just keep track of where she was. He couldn’t risk loosing her. Humming deep in his chest he followed her upwards, and then left in a slightly more curving flight path than her own sharp turn. He climbed the sky with her – though he was still a few dragonlengths behind, since accelerating is hard when one is flying upwards – and watched with the astonishment of an awed spectator as she twirled gracefully and dived down. This was the time for being cunning – he wasn’t risking a vertical drop with his large wingspan, even for Massath – and he angled downwards on a terrifyingly fast slope so that he met her when she reached the canopy of the trees below them. Her trill sent a new rush of adrenaline through his veins, and he couldn’t resist showing off a little for her when she turned her head, doing a little zig-zagging of his own when he was behind her. But he wasn’t going to waste all his energy on fancy movements, was he? You had to be economical when you were in a flight – especially in a flight with a green as experienced as Massath.

But Scarth was experienced as well, for though he might be younger than her, a green could only fly as many times a year as her bodily cycle allowed her. A blue could fly as many times as he wished, whenever he wanted to answer the innate call that filled him when he heard any shriek of an in-heat green. So Scarth knew that he had to save his strength, not use it all up on tricks like a first-timer. He followed her above the treetops in a straight line, a contrast to her jerky movements. His humming intensified a little, just to let her know he was hot on her tail this time – he was getting faster with every stroke of his blue wings.

As Scarth got closer to the green in the skies above, S’peer was forced to pay attention to the warning that R’ven was giving him. He didn’t want to – name one blue rider who enjoys keeping a distance from the rider of the green he’s chasing? Except that S’peer and his dragon weren’t really separate at that point. There was some degree of difference – after all, S’peer was holding back from going closer to R’ven, and yet Scarth seemed to be gaining on Massath – but not enough that the low humming of the blue wasn’t echoed by S’peer, a low growl audible in the back of his throat.
