The automatic seat operation for access to the rear seats has failed on my car. All the motors work correctly when
operated through the adjustment controls. It appears that the necessary switch is operated via a short cable when the
back of the seat is moved forward.
Can anybody suggest what may be wrong and how I might take remedial action without resort to the main dealer who I have
very little confidence in!

Pete.

- Foot Operated Transmission Sports Mode Switch -- David Lewis, 10:51:44 10/08/02 Tue
Last longwinded report on my series of modifications as, for the time being, I'm running out of spare money and of things to easily modify.
My complaint with the auto transmision on the V6 was that switching between standard and sports mode was difficult because the button is placed on the wrong side of the transmission selector, it has the little used snow mode button in front of it and it's difficult to find with your hand in a hurry.
I wanted to wire in a foot pedal switch but Peugeot were remarkably unhelpful and I was worried that since the device was a function of the computer which controls the transmission it might be very expensive to have fixed if I wrecked the computer by faulty wiring. I was totally wrong. The modification is a doddle. I used a foot pedal switch off a dictating machine, attached it to the foot rest in the left of the driver footwell and wired it in parallel with the yellow and brown wires (5 & 4) on the button. Simple job, no hidden complexities and it works a treat. The original button remains operable but I'll probably never touch it again.
Now I can change in and out of sports mode with a tap of my left foot whenever I need the sheer grunt that holding down the gears gives and whenever I need to encourage the box to change up to save fuel. I really recommend this mod to any auto box jockeys who feel that they made a mistake in not buying the manual box. If anyone needs to know more details I'm only too happy to oblige.

- Electrical problems -- Paul, 10:50:46 02/20/03 Thu
I have a 1998 3.0 V6 SE Coupe. Last week the battery light on the dash came on and has stayed on since, when the engine is running. I havent though, not had any problems with either starting or when driving. Furthermore, the light on the clock now doesnt work, the offside rear foglight doesnt work (this I hope is just a bulb) and the electric folding mirrors dont work.
Has anyone any ideas on what are the likely things to cause the battery light to be on continually.
I have managed to remove the clock from the dash and have replaced the bulb however, when the ignition is switched on, the backing light comes on, but it is a lot dimmer than the radio and heater LED displays. When the lights are turned on, the light on the clock dims right down so that it is practically out, which I dont think is right. Any suggestions?
When I switch the headlights on, the LED display for the radio and heater dims down slightly. Is this correct?
How difficult is the offside rear fog lamp holder to get to, to change the bulb. It looks as though the carpetting in the boot needs removing?
If I start the engine with the electric folding mirror control in the down position, I can hear a winding noise, as though the mirrors are trying to activate but the folding mirrors do not move?
The height adjustment for the passenger electric front seat has been snapped off. How do I remove the housing unit and is it difficult to replace it? I assume that I will need to buy a new unit?
I have been told by Haynes that they do not produce a manual for the 406 Coupe. Does anybody know of any vehicle workshop type manuals that are available?

- Gutmann Engine Kits -- Tony Johnson, 15:30:14 11/04/02 Mon
I saw an old message at the bottom of this forum plugging these engine kits for coupe's from gutmann in Germany claiming to give 14/17 BHP extra on a 2.0L. Has any one any experience of this or a UK based equivalent. Apparently it's some sort of box which pulls the fresh air into an uprated air filter and a two pipe exhaust. - Sorry I have limited technical knowledge. I was thinking this plus a chip would make about 25bhp and increase the total to around 160 BHP

Hi everybody,
I am considering one of the above options for my 2002 coup 2,2 HDi and would like to know your opinions and/or experiences. there is such a vast choice out there that it is difficult to chooce the best method and brand.
There is a moment during accelaration where the car does not "pull" anymore. I would like to minimize this "gap" in acceleration and make the whole action a smoother one.
anyone out there who can chare his/her experiences?

Yes I know there aren't any but the lack of them is beginning to irritate me. It's a safety issue. If drivers of 106's need rear wipers, what is it about 406 Coupe drivers which means that we can live without them! Has anyone added rear wipers as a modification? Is there any one who sells a kit and instructions of how to do the job? Has anyone done the job using Peugeot components from other models and can advise? Failing this, is there a preferred modification using components from another manufacturer? Can anyone advise?

- Loudspeakers rear -- Rob Jansen, 03:04:35 08/29/02 Thu
Recently I bought a beautiful second-hand 406 coupe. Unfortunately, the loudspeakers were missing. I already placed new ones in the front doors (universal Pioneers) but do not know what to fit in the back (standard 6-9 oval speakers do not seem to fit).
The Peugeot dealer told me there are 2 types (of which the JBL speakers were the best). The dealer could only sell me the entire set (front + rear + tweeters) but I only need the rear speakers.
- Can anyone tell me the exact type of the rear speakers which will fit in my coupe? Then I can buy them elsewhere.
- I am curious for the experience of other 406 coupe owners wrt to quality of the two speakers types.
- If anyone has rear speakers he wants to sell, I am also interested.
Hoping for response,
Rob Jansen

- steering rack problems -- Karen, 09:38:15 10/08/02 Tue
The steering rack on my 2.5 year old V6 failed at a roundabout. On inspection the bolts holding the rack to the subframe had worked loose. They had been insufficiently tightened following previous work. The steering rack has now been replaced. Has anyone else experienced similar problems? By the way I am also having problems with the driver's seat motor, it appears to be a common fault.

- Fuel Combustion Catalyst Update -- David Lewis, 02:30:01 10/07/02 Mon
Just a quick up-date to say that I'm now running the V6 on 95 RON unleaded with the catalyst unit in place and the performance is as good as with 97 RON either before I fitted the thing or since, possibly better. This device may be sold as an emmissions improver or a fuel economy enhancer but I'm just happy with it as a performance modification. It's like driving a different car. I'd certainly recommend it to 406 Coupe drivers even if the fitting was not as easy as it might have been.

- Fuel Combustion Improvement Catalyst -- David Lewis, 11:03:15 09/30/02 Mon
I've now had the Broquet fuel catalyst fitted to the fuel tank of my V6. If you want to know more about Broquet, visit http://www.broquet.co.uk to find out more about the WWII invention which allowed the RAF to operate Merlin engined Hurricanes needing high octane fuel on the poor quality petrol available in Russia. Well now it's in my fuel tank.
Firstly the down side. It cost me dearly to have it fitted by the Peugeot dealership because the tank had to be half removed and new sealing gaskets fitted. On top of the cost of the catalyst, 78, the fitting cost was 98 so I was feeling a little poor. The car had half a tank of 97 octane unleaded in it which I use to give an extra couple of bhp. When I pulled away the pick up was very much more rapid and smooth. I suspect that the Broquet is giving the equivalent of an additional 2 or so octane and the engine is really appreciating it.
I can't really quantify the improvement in output but I know it's there in the same way that I knew I had more oomph when I chipped the engine management computer. Broquet promise improved emissions and fuel economy if you go easy with your right foot but I suspect that I'll settle for the emission improvement and take my bonus in extra urge.
In case you think I'm imagining all this, I did the same with my old Honda Prelude 2.3 which was recommended to run on 97 octane as I thought I would run it on 95 + the catalyst. I got used to the extra power output over 4 years and although the 406 doesn't need 97, it tends to run better on it and with the Broquet it really runs a whole lot better. Any performance improvements are not going to upset the insurers. Whether it's value for money is debatable but once I started the job I wasn't going to let a little thing like money stand in my meglomaniac way.
The next job is a foot pedal switch for the automatic transmission 'sports' mode as I'm fed up with groping passengers right leg while changing the shift mode.

- Replacement Brake Discs -- David Lewis, 03:28:12 09/19/02 Thu
I though I'd just post information on experiences with my V6 as it seems a pity if the only postings are desperate cries for help.
This is information for anyone who is suffering the same brake disc wear problems that I have experienced on my V6.
The rear brake discs wore out at 35,000, which is just so bad that I actually complained to Peugeot as the units should be experiencing very little stress in use and should last the lifetime of the car. Of course they just muttered on about friction components not being covered by warranty, even if they are wearing out far to early, and would accept no responsibility. So I replaced them with discs sourced from Brembo as Peugeot could hardly complain about non standard equipment as they fit Brembo brakes to the car.
Having done that, just 10,000 miles later, the front discs wore out and I didn't even bother to talk to Peugeot as I knew what they'd say. I sourced a set of drilled and grooved Red Dot competition discs from Need for Speed Ltd of Helensborough, who had found the Brembo rear discs for me. Red Dot machined the discs specially for me and they were delivered in just one week from ordering. I matched these with Red Dot fast road pads and am very happy with their performance. Even under high speed braking the car holds a better line than with the appalling Peugeot discs. The special high performance components actually cost me only 27 more than original Peugeot parts and I am hoping for a much longer life than 45,000 miles. A set of Honda discs on a 2.3 Prelude lasted me 120,000 miles so you can see that it's not the way the car is being used that is responsible for the high wear rate and consequently why I was not exactly happy with Peugeot. The only downside to this modification is that the competition pads set do not have the low pad wear warning light contacts built into them so I shall have to inspect the pads regularly to monitor wear. I suppose I could have fitted Peugeot pads but I'm not feeling well disposed towards them.
My next modification is fitting a Broquet fuel catalyst pack in the fuel tank. I'll give details of that when it's done in case anyone is interested in this clever little gadget of which I have previous experience and about which I can only report good things.

- Gearbox problems with cold engine -- Rob, 23:02:27 09/17/02 Tue
My 2.0 l coupe has problems shifting in the gears when the engine is cold. The main problem occurs when I want to lay in the first gear. It is almost impossible with a cold engine. The resistance at selecting the other gears is also higher with a cold engine.
When the engine is on temperature, there are no problems.
Has anybody got experience with this? What can I do to solve this problem?

I have a 98 3.0SE V6. The rear tyres are wearing much fast er than the front ones (rear tyres 8mm down to 4mm in 4000km whilst virtualy no wear on front tyres) also the rear seems unsable in the wet (going over manhole covers, white lines etc.) Does anyone know what the problem is or have the same problem. I've had the tracking checked twice - & its perfectly OK. The tyre pressure is correct & the wear is even across the rear tyres. The Peugeot dealer doesn't understand the problem.
Only thing could be is that its a UK RHD car and I've been in Austria for 6 months, but can't see why this should make a difference.

- Dashboard level vent modification -- David Lewis, 07:10:16 08/29/02 Thu
I found that no matter how I tried to adjust the two driver side vents, when the air-con was running I could not stop a stream of icy air freezing my fingers on the steering wheel. This may sound trivial but after a trip of several hundred miles my finger joints were quite painful. PSA do not allow the air to these vents to be fully controlled by the electronic ventilation control selector as they discovered late in development that without some bleed through these vents the climate control thermostat could not adequately change the cabin temperature. The advice was to close them off completely using the thumb wheel air volume controls. But if you want air through these vents it is not possible to direct all the air away from the driver's hands.
On inspecting the vent mechanism I discovered that the vertical vanes which direct the air left and right can never deflect the air close to the edge of the aperture. I cured this by just pulling out the vent units, they will unclip with a firm pull, and blanking off an inch of the vent on the inboard side of each vent with black plastic sheet cut from a loose-leaf binder held in place with double-sided carpet fixing tape, making sure that it was secured at the top, bottom and side and that it bowed away from the moving vanes to allow them to pass. I replaced the vent grids and now can still direct air fully left or right but do not have the constant bleed of unwanted air at the vent edges adjacent to the air volume thumb wheels.
The actual modification is not beautiful but with the vents replaced cannot be seen at all. The vent is now redesigned the way that PSA should have designed it in the first place.
Now has anyone got any ideas how to stop the engine revs rising 500 rpm and driving the car forward when the power steering is activated while the car is stationery. I've got a cracked front bumper to point up that design quirk!

- Difference between engine-performance of the "old" V6 and the "new" one. -- Belgarath, 08:46:54 03/18/02 Mon
Hi,
I own a 406 Coupe V6 from October 1998.
Shortly after I bought my car a new engine version was build into the 406 Coupe with 210 BHp in stead of the 194 BHp that the previous version had.
Where does the nes engine get this extra power, as I can't imagine they designed a totally new-type engine.
Did they just "chip-tune" an old-type engine, or is it mechanically different?
Thanks, Belgarath

- V6 Auto transmission electronics -- David Lewis, 04:55:48 04/19/02 Fri
I really need to reprogram the electronics for the auto box to force in to change up to top gear in Sports Mode at the UK speed limit of 70 mph rather than the existing programmed French speed limit of 130 kph. Peugeot overlooked this facter on their export cars and this means that you cannot get the car to change up in Sports mode unless you cruise above the UK speed limit. However, no one will advise me on this so as a compromise I would like to rewire the Sports Mode selection button to operate from a foot button on the foot rest so that I can blip the mode and force a gear change. Anybody got a wiring diagram showing the colour code and functions for the wiring going to the mode buttons which are placed in a really stupid location more suited to French drivers but actually imitating Mercedes layout. All Jap cars have the buttons on the transmission selector where you can find them without taking your eyes off the road. Peugeot and their dealers will never give wiring information to owners. Can anyone help?

- Auto Transmission Sports Program Selection Button -- David Lewis, 14:58:35 12/08/01 Sat
I'm still fretting about the difficulty encountered in finding the sports program button in a hurry. I've given up the neat idea of putting it on the now redundant horn button on the left hand control stalk and am prepared to settle for a foot operated button on the foot rest depressed by an organ pedal type accelerator pedal. However, I still need to know how the actual button works to wire it in parallel. Is it a) press to make/release to break, b) press to break/release to make, c) latch operated to hold make or break. Also, very important, which wires send the signal to the computer and is the operation single or double pole. I cannot find anyone in PSA or in local dealers who is even willing to talk to me since I only own the car!
Can anyone advise me?

- Winter tyres -- Iain Brodie, 13:08:40 11/16/01 Fri
Winter has returned to Munich and, after putting the winter wheels on, I remembered that some of you had been kind enough to respond to my question: why are they smaller (diameter) than the summer ones ?
Some months ago, I finally received a telephone message as answer from Peugeot Germany - it is simply to leave more room for snow chains, as some of you had suggested. I am still not completely convinced, I think there is enough clearance in the wheel arches around the summer tyres, and the winter tyres are already narrower. Anyway, the authorities and dealers in Germany are very strict about which tyre sizes are approved for a car, so I simply have to comply.
There was another issue: why did I have to buy another set of alloy wheels for my winter tyres ? Most people here have their winter tyres mounted on cheap steel wheels. The salt on the roads is not good for alloys and everything is so dirty there seems to be no point in using nice alloys. Answer: the alloys are apparently necessary because there are no steel wheels with a shape which leaves room for the 406 Coupe's Brembo brake calipers.

- Shock Absorbers -- teemu, 23:45:09 09/05/01 Wed
I am about to change the shock absorbers after 45000 km to our V6. The idea is not to put in new springs, but to have a good firmer than before ride with proper dampers.
What would you recommend to have a more sporty and tougher feeling than with the original ones? Is the only real option to buy both tougher springs and then excellent shock absorbers. Will a good set of dampers do?
I doubt the value added of lowering the body, but what are my options and how much would it cost. I guess Eibach has one set. Any other ones you would know?

- Lack of power!!!! -- Kevin, 03:04:57 09/05/01 Wed
My 406 2.0 seems to have a lack of power. When driving at 70mph, with my foot just resting on the throttle, the car seems to accelerate and de-accelerate intermtantly without me pressing my foot down or off the accelerator. Some days the lack of acceleration is very noticable, as though the engine has lost power. I have taken it back to a Peugeot dealer many times but they say they can find nothing wrong with the downloads or set up. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

- test reports -- paul galestin, 10:37:45 06/11/01 Mon
I wonder if anyone has spotted more (comparative)testreports about the coupe than the ones listed below:
-RACV roadtest feb 2000 (comparison with Alfa Romeo GTV) on Autobytel.com
-roadtest april 1999, Evening Post, New Zealand on roadtest.co.nz
- coupe comparison 3/12/2000(with BMW3, Volvo C70, Toyota Celica) in FSmotorist on fsmotorist.co.uk
- Coupe versus Ford Cougar 18/03/01 in Autovisie, in autotelegraaf.nl
- dubbeltest coupe 2.2 HDI and Mercedes-Benz c-class CDI sportcoupe in Autoweek 24. I have seen other reports but they were not comparative. Not much writing space in this forum, by the way. Hope to hear from some of you, thanks

- V6 Transmission Sports Program Selector Button -- David Lewis, 14:05:21 08/10/01 Fri
I have a 1999 406 V6 Auto and am not happy about the position of the 'Sports' program button. It is placed in a position suitable for left-hand drive cars although my model is right-hand drive. I have turned the switch body round so that the sports button is nearer to me than the 'Ice' button but ideally I would like to rewire the button to operate from the spare left hand column stalk tip button. Any ideas on the feasibility of this mod? Is the button activatable? What is the wiring which would need to re-routed? It's an elegant idea but can it be done easily?
Is there anyone who would know?
Don't get me wrong. I'm very impressed with the 406 V6 but the position of this button has been left where it suits French drivers and it's really irritating trying to find it in a hurry when you need the power from the V6. In standard transmission mode it's a little flat.

- To buy or not to buy? -- Gary Donovan, 16:11:26 08/04/01 Sat
After many gloriously happy - if fragile - years with a Fiat Coupe, I am considering buying a 406 coupe, ideally the SE version. Are there any horror stories going around from owners that I should know about or is it a safe, reliable car to own with no bits falling off it?

- Hello -- Henk van Roest, 10:28:46 07/09/01 Mon
Hey all,
I went to get my car serviced this morning (306 Cabriolet) and suddenly felt that I just loved the 406 Coupe and had to have one, 1.5 hours later, test drive completed, heart pounding, paperwork signed and in 5 days I pick up my new Diablo Red SE 3.0 V6, why the hell did I not buy one before?
I know what you're thinking.... Dutch name speaks in English... yep it's true, I am Dutch but moved to the UK 24 years ago.
Anyway, like the web site, and I may be able to help with the hosting issues, working on that. I'll try to make it to your next meet and maybe catch up with my sister at the same time (she lives in Holland)
Hell it's a beautiful car.....
Henk

- Electric seat problem -- Donal O'Callaghan, 08:02:54 06/26/01 Tue
Hi Folks,
The back of my electric driver seat is refusing to move. I can hear the motor running so I know this is not the problem.
I isolated the problem to a loose cable. The problem is that I cannot see the motor as it seems to be tucked up inside the seat.
As such, any suggestions as to how I might solve this beyond having to bring it back to the garage.
If I can locate the motor I think I can simply plug the cable back in.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Donal.
