I have chosen the Thomas Eakins: The American Realist exhibit that will be held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from October 4,2001- January6, 2001. The exhibit will include 60 oil paintings, watercolor drawings, sculpture, and photography. Eakins's artwork celebrated sports, the outdoors, as well as the difficult times in American society during the reconstruction and post reconstruction eras. In the classroom we would focus on the reconstruction era & the state of our country. We would also discuss other artist during Eakins time period, for example Monet and Renoir, as well as new inventions during this time period.

Hello everyone! I'm impressed with the thought and creativity that you have put into this project. I can't wait to read the full projects. I am especially excited by those reports that specifically name what activities they had in mind for the students. While I did not model this myself, I am glad some of you made that leap into thinking of practical, interactive ways to get your students involved.

I have not replied or made comments on everyone's project. However, if I did have a question or was particularly struck by a thought or detail, I did then write a reply to your entry. We'll talk about it all tomorrow night in class.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday....

I have chosen an exhibit housed at the National Museum in Washington, DC entitled, "Exploring Marine Ecosystems."

One of the requested criteria, that of accessibility, could not be met as museums and exhibits dealing with marine mammels are generally located on the coasts. This particular web site is a virtual tour and includes pictures and text that deal with the ecosystems and creatures of the seas and oceans of the world, explains the importance of keeping the ecosystem healthy and the role that humans play in creating and correcting environmental issues.

My science lesson is geared to students in the fourth grade. Using this, and other resources, the students, as a class, will explore the role/job of a marine biologist. Breaking into collaborative groups, students will learn the differences and similarities between baleen and toothed whales, the eating habits and habitats of their chosen whale species and the pivotal role that man plays in their survival. The groups will then share with the class what they have discovered. While listening to the songs whale sing, the students will draw their version of whales in their under water worlds. If time permits, I would also like them to create a short play that incorporates the information they have learned.

I have chosen the exhibit at the Mercer Museum for 6th grade. The museum has many artifacts represeting life during the early stages of this country (18th & 19th) centeries. With over 55 exhibits scattered throughout the museum there is much for the children to explore.

I have decided to focus on the later half of the 18th century for this project. The children will be instructed to find the 3 exhibits that they feel would be most important to women and men for survival needs during this time. They will also be required to elaborate on why they feel these items are so important, and why other items might not make the list.

It will also be required for them to determined what items might have been the toughest to make. What would the students have done differently in order to improve the items based on the technology available at the time.

Once back in the classroom I will ask each child to try and recreate one of the items they saw at the exhibit using the art materials that are available. They will be asked to elaborate on their choice by explaining what it did and why they picked it.

By making the final experience more tangable I hope to show the students the difficulties faced during the birth of our country as well as the ingenuity of our ancestors.

P. Buckley Moss, Whispering Woods Gallery, Holland, PA
I chose this exhibit because her art communicates the simple lifestyle of the Amish people in a developmentally appropriate manner for school-aged children. I plan to use her as a resource in my classroom to integrate art with the fourth grade social studies curriculum of the Fifty States. Specifically, the children learn about the early settlers in the various regions of the US. The Amish people were invited to settle in PA by Wm Penn and in other colonies, such as VA, OH and Iowa. Using Amish culture as the core concept, I would assign a project relating Gardner's MI theory to ensure a relevant and meaningful learning experience. The students would be required to visit the gallery and from what they learned, they would be required to: build a farm using only natural materials and Amish technology; act out an Amish scene reflecting their traditions; create a melody describing Amish values, or select a piece of artwork and write a story about Amish customs, etc.

I have chose to use the James Mann Art Farm which is located in Lehigh County, Pa.

The class is geared to K - 1 who will learn about life on a farm. These paintings will give the students the opportunity to see what a farm looks like (landscape & buildings)but also the what types of equipment a farmer may use on the farm.

I have chosen the Indigo Arts gallery, a small art gallery and shop located in Old City Philadelphia. The gallery also has an excellent website at www.indigoarts.com.

Featuring art work from around the world, the Indigo Arts gallery allows its visitors to "celebrate color, texture, and the boundless creativity of the human spirit, with an international bazaar of art and artifacts collected from Asia, Africa, and the Americas." Through the gallery's many exhibits visitors also gain insight into the cultural history of these lands.

Given the variety of art work displayed in the gallery, this resource can be utilized throughout the Social Studies curriculum as well as across many grade levels. I chose to use the gallery's "A Magic Reality: Prints and Collages from Oaxaca, Mexico" in my unit on Mexico with my first grade students. We will use the images at the gallery and several children's literature books illustrated by the same artists to gain an understanding of the people and culture of Mexico.

The resource I have chosen is The Pennsbury Manor in Morrisville, Pennsylvania.

The Pennsbury Manor was the personal home of William Penn. The manor is dedicated to remembering Penn and colonial America through authentically guided tours.

This tour is beneficial to all ages, however, this resource could be integrated into a fourth grade history lesson of colonial America. Along with the hands on experiences, this tour will help create a lasting impression and give the students a better understanding of the living conditions during that era.

The resource I've chosen is the Bucks County Children's Cultural Center.

This is a 'Workshops on Wheels Program' which currently includes four areas of content important to Bucks County heritage. They include: Native Americans, Underground Railroad, Dinasaurs & Fossils, and Architectural Fun & Games. It is a high energy, hands on, make it and take it program which incorporates history, literature, music, dance, art, and games.

The program appears versitile enough to adjust to varying age levels but is geared primarily for the elementary student. I could foresee using the underground railroad program as part of a fourth or fifth grade Pennsylvania history unit. One of the projects involves a quilt activity showing how the slaves communicated with each other.

I have chosen to use a permanent collection of artifacts at the Mercer Museum located in Doyelstown Pa.
The collections and exhibits are comprised of artifacts associated with everyday life and work in early America. Included in its collection of more than 50,000 objects, the museum is known for its collections of tools and artifacts associated with pre-industrial trades, crafts, agriculture and domestic work.
I will try to tie these artifacts into a history standard for children in the fourth grade that adresses changes in technology, the work people did, transportation, and local resources. The students will participate on a "frontier trading" activity at the museum on a field trip, and will participate in a webquest that connects the museams finding's with a turn of the century job fair.

I have chosen the upcoming Thomas Eakins exhibit opening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in October (Oct 4-Jan 6).

This exhibit is a retrospective of Eakins work as an important Philadelphia artist who found success after the Civil War until his death in 1916. Eakins was associated with the American Realist movement. His works focused on athletics and portraits of local Philadelphia characters.

In bringing this into my elementary classroom, I might consider using his art in a Philadephia History unit. Or, I could use his sports-related paintings in a unit discussing how sports interact with culture and how important athleticism is to culture and individual development. (The children could paint each other in various sports "poses.") Finally, since Eakins was one of the first artists to use a camera, his work can be connected to an "inventions" unit.
