Hi All,
Have any of you had experience of work shadowing somebody who is generally inadequate at their job in order to advise them how they could do it better? I have to advise somebody on how to do this and wouldn't mind some guidance on this method or any other that is successful.

- Next module with Ann -- Ann Rippin, 05:33:17 06/17/02 Mon
This is a bit of advance info searching.
We have a module coming up in September which is left fairly free so that we can do what seems most interesting or useful in it.
It's an opportunity for people to learn from each other (as this usually comes up as a major requirement or 'best part of the course' for lots of people. This means there is quite a lot of student input.
Last year we looked at case studies as a learning technique on the first day and then groups worked to prepare their own cases on the second which they presented on the third.
The year before (which was a much smaller group) everyone led a session on what they considered to be their area of expertise.
Another option is to run some sessions on 'hot' topics - whatever we define them to be, but could include globalisation, impact of technology, stakeholder management, coporate social responsibility, improvisation in management, gender in organisations whatever. Despite my experience this year, I realise my limitations and would expect some help in preparing material... I would quite like to do something on alternative ways of presenting knowledge as this is my current passion but appreciate that not everyone will be equally thrilled at the prospect. We could run it into some stuff on creativity.
So, anyone with ideas please get in touch - and if you get a moment you might want to talk about it on your next module.
Otherwise, good luck for the summer - read lots!
Ann

Hi all
Hope all are well and looking forward to Saturday. Last time we met we talked of a social after we finished on Saturday - anyone still interested???
I am away now until Friday evening so I won't be able to organise anything formally, so unless anyone else would like to step into the breach?......., shall we just gather those willing drinkers and head for a bar?, and for those hardened socialites, see where the evening takes us??....
Anyone know what the start time is on Saturday?

- Great training courses -- Lene, 03:31:43 05/22/02 Wed
I've got the task of finding a suitable training course for our new MD (but don't tell him because he doens't know yet!) The kind of thing I want is an open programme for v senior people - not too long i.e not a two week job, but something like 3 or 4 days. It needs to be a general course encompassing lots of skills needed at that level of seniority (not the sort of course that I particularly think he should go on, but I'm doing what the Chairman says here!!)
Ta!
Anyone come across anything like this before that they can recommend? Myself, I think personal coaching would acheive better results, but Chairman deosn't think MD will go for this.

Would also be happy to arrange something for June 22 if there is sufficient interest??

IN AND OUT OF THE CAREER STREAM
Learning to Live with Career Uncertainty / Seminar at University of Bristol
Your career is literally your business. You own it as sole proprietor. You have one employee: yourself. It is your responsibility to protect this personal business of yours from harm and to position it to benefit from the changes in the environment. Nobody else can do that for you.
Andy Grove, CEO, Intel
What do you want to achieve through your career? Is it simply a way of paying the monthly bills or is it more than that? This seminar provides practical advice on safeguarding and building your current career, but it also tackles a deeper and more challenging question; what can stop us from crafting the career (and life) that we really want for ourselves?
Learn about the fundamental career lessons of the last decade and what the future holds in store
We are all aware that the nature of work has changed radically in recent years as organisations have embraced new technology and management ideas, coped with increasing complexity and competitiveness, and made ever greater demands on their people:
• What lessons can we learn as individuals, either on the inside of organisations attempting to prosper (or simply survive!) or stepping outside to carve our own niche?
• What does the immediate future hold for us as the economic downturn begins to bite and organisations react to an increasingly uncertain future?
Periods of transition are times of opportunity as well as challenge
Simply understanding what is happening in the world around us is not enough. During this seminar we will look at how you can actively take control of your career and build the life that you want. We will explore some of the trade-offs that you might need to make when you change track, and take a look at the paradox of pro-actively managing your career whilst being open to where life itself is leading you.
This seminar will address how you can manage your career to meet work and life objectives, for example:
• What to expect in the next 18 months and how to work with the forthcoming changes.
• The seven golden rules for career resilience – the practical steps you can take to boost your career prospects and finding the work that suits you best.
• Making a Fresh Start – summoning up the courage to make fundamental changes in your life.
• Exploring new options - alternative career structures and life choices including ‘portfolio’ careers and choices on life-work balance.
• Surviving a period of career transition - what to do and what not to do!
New working relationships – developing a genuine ‘win-win’ between organisations and individuals
We will also be looking at how companies should respond to the new economic climate and how they can best safeguard long term resources, while gaining short term flexibility by embracing new working relationships.
ADMINISTRATION
The seminar will be held at the University of Bristol at 43 Woodland Road on Saturday March 9th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The cost is £25 per head.
Tutors
The seminar is being run by John Middleton and Bob Gorzynski, who both work extensively in personal and organisational transition and career management.
John Middleton is a leading author in the field of careers and organisational change. His books include Smart Things to Know About Your Career, which will be published in November 2001 and be available at the seminar. He is the founder of the Bristol Management Research Centre and works extensively with individuals (coaching and mentoring) and organisations (consultancy) in the field of organisational change. He has an extensive background in Human Resources, including at BAA plc and Sun Life, and teaches organisational development and the future of organisations at postgraduate level at the University of Bristol.
Bob Gorzynski specialises in facilitating strategic and organisational change at senior level by working on a one-on-one basis with the CEO/Managing Director and/or with the executive team. Over the past three years Bob has developed the innovative Fresh Start Executive Programme to enable senior executives to evaluate their current career and circumstances in the light of their deeper aspirations. He has extensive consulting experience in organisational strategy within both the private and public sectors and also teaches strategy and organisational change at postgraduate level at Bristol University. He trained as a Chartered Accountant and has an MBA from York University in Toronto.

Hi everyone - thank you for all the chapters I have received so far. First in get a better write up (oo what power). But seriously, I would like to do as much as I can to pull our 'book' together and so am thinking about:
TITLE - currently 'A textbook on Managment Development by students on the MSc in MDT at Bristol University, 2001-2003"
possibly a bit pedestrian - how about
'Insights into Management Development Now' - experience meets theory in the working practice of students on the...
or perhaps
'What is Management Development?' an overview of theory and practice by the MDT 2001 cohort
or any other suggestions?
ORDER & SECTION HEADINGS
If you have any comments on the current grouping or section headings ( Mike - I noted you want your chapter to be in the current debates section)
CHAPTER HEADINGS
Please give your chapter the title you want used
Thanks

- Assignment Two -- Lorraine Vaun-Davis, 00:36:52 01/09/02 Wed
Dear All,
Firstly a belated HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I have just been checking our brief from Ann on Assignment Two, and was reminded that we should not overlap on content. So would it be a good idea, for us to cross check?
My Chapter is on the use of Emotional Intelligence, and in support of it I have made reference to:
Models of Behaviours, Attidudes and Personality.
Gardeners Multiple Intelligence's
Belbins work on Teams.
Has, anyone else included these and if so would it be prudent to liaise? Then we could cross-reference to each others chapters.
It also mentions in the brief that as well as an Introduction there should be a Conclusion. Are we happy to each do this in our individual chapters, or do you think we need a group one.
Regards
Lorraine

- Assignment numbetr one -- Ann Rippin, 06:52:29 12/20/01 Thu
I have now marked all your assignments and given them back to Jeff so you will be getting them back before Christmas - Christmas post permitting.
I passed everyone so no need to worry. The majority were very good and I think it was a good idea to do the critical reading exercise at this point in the programme.
There are a few comments that everyone might be interested in:
1. Technical things like referencing tripped up a few people - I have given quite a lot of feedback on individual scripts about this. It would be a good idea to get it sorted out early in the programme.
2. You must get into the habit of giving page references for direct quotes. You must, you must.
3. More positively, there was a refreshing amount of free-thinking going on, and I think that this year's cohort will be much crisper in their dismissal of some of the more popular thinkers than in previous years. This bodes really well for the future. Congratulations to those of you who were prepared to take on some of the heavy weights - you won.
4. I was surprised by how open people were to psychodynamic theory and how many of you were prepared to see its place in organisational analysis. This is another marked change on last year. It's not that the theory is necessarily right, but it does imply that lots of you are prepared to go behind the very simple and naive explanations given in so much management writing. I don't mind if you choose psychodynamics or chaos theory or actor network theory - just having a go is enough for me!
5. Try and stamp out those rhetorical questions. It implies that you have not done the analysis necessary to answer the questions you set. Is this a real issue? Does this matter? How can we decide how crucial a matter this is? See what I mean - you tell me!
6. These were some of the most interesting assignments I have read for a long time. They were almost invariably well-written (which is a first) and came at things from really interesting angles. I was struck by new things in articles that I had already read before which was great.
That's probably enough, then.
Ann

- Info for second assignment -- Sue Pendle, 02:42:01 11/26/01 Mon
My bit for the second assignment is about identifyning what management development is appropriate when. I'm thinking particularly about development of different skills etc or at different stages in a career ie for different levels of management. If anyone is working with a staged process of management development and would be happy to let me have some information about it or to talk to me about it I would be very happy to hearfrom you.
Thanks
Sue

Hi there Ann,
Can you please clarify what the protocol on referencing is when you are using information from the BBC Business Internet site, as it is not accredited to a particular author. Do I put the author as BBC Business News, then provide details of URL, under the publiation details?

I have made a booking for a table at Budokan City Centre in Bristol for Saturday night 8 Dec at 8pm. I have put a deposit down for a provisional number of 20 which can be adjusted up or down nearer the time (only non-refundable within 24 hrs of event).
Budokan is a pan-Asian restaurant and I have asked for the Christmas menu (no turkey you'll be pleased to hear!) - look at the website www.budokan.co.uk for details.
Please let me know if you (and partners) wish to come and be ready to give me 3 quid per head (the deposit) on the 24th Nov.

- Re online journals -- Jon Cowell, 02:18:03 10/12/01 Fri
Re online journals, I do not know if I am alone in having had some difficulty in gaining access to the system from a remote location - it seems that I need to do something clever with my browser preferences in order to appear to be using a Univ PC. Further, it appears that the online library does not contain some of the journals to which reference is made in the reading lists. I was wondering whether, if anyone does manage to track down the relevant articles, it might be possible to post them on this board, or somewhere else accessible to the group? Any ideas?

Is there any interest in an evening out in Bristol on the 8th Dec to coincide with the next whole weekend module? I am happy to book a restaurant/or other if so, however, as it is a Saturday in December we will have to get our skates on for a large-ish number. Could I have your thoughts/ideas by the end of the month please.

- Identity crisis (copy of Jeanette, Mike & Zelda's email) -- Dave, 10:44:49 10/17/01 Wed
Hi All
It seems everyone is keen to change the title of the MSc programme and Jeff Watkins has circulated a note asking for views. As we know previous attempts have resulted in the status quo due to a lack of consistency in the views expressed.
To try and achieve some consensus to enable a change to take place we would
like to suggest for consideration MSc in Organisational Strategy and Change
as a revised title.
Why this wording?
Well.... it seems to us to fit the content, position it at a high and
topical level and so enhance the potential currency of the degree both for
us and the years that follow. From discussions we know some people dislike
the word Strategy but given that it is 'organisational strategy' we think
that softens and distances it from pure 'corporate strategy'
Let us know what you think.
Whatever the final wording we are keen to ensure that any change applies to
our MSc award so again general support on this point would also be useful.
Regards
Jeanette

- Hello -- Tim Pitts, 09:05:31 10/23/01 Tue
As I missed the Induction Day I thought I would give an introduction to myself so that I am less of shadowy presence to those who did not meet me on the 13/14. The only trouble is that the course members I did not manage to talk to will still be a shadowy presence for me! However, hopefully I will be able to talk with you next time.
I work in the publishing business as a commissioning editor. My job involves researching markets in computing and engineering, deciding on which areas we should publish books, then finding the authors to write them. Once found, I then have to project manage authors as they write their book. The tailors in the emperor’s new clothes story reminded me of some of my authors: they promise the earth but often deliver nothing!
My interest in the content of the course developed from the personal development I embarked on over 10 years ago. I did a co-counselling course, which used the experiential methods described in village 4 of the article ‘ A Framework for Making Sense of Experiential Learning’. I found this method of learning very powerful and it helped unblock some of my barriers for further learning and development. My interest in my own development soon confronted me with how my organization was thwarting development of myself and the others within it. I have been interested in these issues ever since. A few years back I set up a consultancy for the publishing industry providing training on publishing strategy, sales and interpersonal skills, and attempted to use experiential methods on the courses.
I was very pleased that a lot of people I met were in personal, management and organisational development
in one way or another. I am keen to learn about the different types of methods you have used to develop managers, their staff and the organization as a whole. In particular, I’m interested to speak or have email correspondence directly with those of you have put together or commissioned development training that is looking to develop managers in any of the following: 1) emotional awareness/intelligence, 2) self understanding and sensitivity to others and 3) ability to think innovatively/creatively.Please do get in touch as I want to understand the type of methods used.Thanks.

- Another view? -- Helen, 05:36:39 10/19/01 Fri
Dear All
Having looked through the suggestions offered so far, the title that leaps out to me is " MSc in Management Development and Organisational Strategy" as not only does it sounds more "professional" but trips quite neatly off the tongue. If we were to go with the suggestion of Organisational Change & Management Development, however, perhaps that title flows a little better in reverse - "MSc in Management Development and Organisational Change". Perhaps I'm just overcomplicating things.

- Books -- Ann Rippin, 07:55:56 10/16/01 Tue
Here are some of the reference for books I mentioned at the weekend:
Larry Hirschhorn (1999) "The workplace within: The psychodynamics of organizational life", Cambridge: MIT Press. First published 1990. Definitely in the library but may well be out - so you might have to recall it.
Richard Appignanesi and Oscar Zarate (1992) "Freud for Beginners" Cambridge: Icon Books.
Andrzej Huczynski (1996) "Management Gurus: What makes them and how to become one", London: International Thomson Business Press. First published 1993. Pretty sure that there's a new edition out.
Gareth Morgan (1986) "Images of Organization", London: Sage - particularly chapter seven. Definitely a new edition out. Also an executive summary version. Yet to discover what the backlash against Morgan is all about other than he has become Californian.
Stephen Fineman (1993) "Emotion in Organizations", London: Sage. Definitely a new edition of this out too. There is quite a lot out about this, but this is one of the first forays, and worth a look.
Charles Handy (1999) "The New Alchemists: How visionary people make something out of nothing" London: Hutchinson. You probably won't want to read this, but just in case... I see he has another new one out about elephants and fleas. Anyone had a look?
Eileen Shapiro (1996) "Fad Surfing in the Boardroom: Reclaiming the courage to manage in the age of instant answers" Oxford: Capstone. bit light but also a breath of fresh air.
More as a I dig them out.

- Bullet points again -- Ann Rippin, 01:00:31 10/03/01 Wed
Here's my reply.
With regard to the bullet point debate: you are, sir,
entitled to your opinion, but you must also allow me to be
entitled to mine. As I said on Saturday, there are plenty
of assignments in which you would be foolish not to use
bullet points. In the first assignment that I will be
giving you, however, I will be looking for continuous prose
as appropriate to the traditional essay format. I will not
be deducting marks for the use of bullets, but, in the
words of the immortal Shania Twain, they won't impress me
much.

- Bullet points -- Ann Rippin, 00:58:30 10/03/01 Wed
Biting the bullet?
Further to our short discussion about the use of bullet points in
written assignments, I'd like to suggest that the bullet point has
now found a place beyond the short, punchy (and shallow) standard
management report. I did some editing work for the Environment Agency
a few years back, which involved me in discussion with one of their
corporate publication style gurus. We eventually agreed that the
bullet point is OK in "serious" text. It is, for example, an ideal
way of dealing with consecutive clauses in a complex argument, laying
out the iteration of points in a clear way on the page. Much easier
to navigate than a blizzard of semicolons. I find bullet points ideal
for setting out and analysing the components of an argument, a slight
shift of block text towards the diagramatic, with attendant
clarification. An aid to legibility and critical analysis.
Here is the first part of my correspondence with David about bullet points. I will post my response if I can still find it!
Feel free to join in.
Ann
When we consider the travesties that now pass for acceptable usage in
the Grauniad, it does not seem entirely unreasonable to suggest, even
at the, ahem, University of Bristol, that the bullet point may be
acceptable contemporary usage. A point to which I am sure we will
return!

- Welcome -- Ann Rippin, 01:05:54 10/02/01 Tue
Welcome to the Forum I have set up for the programme. It is intended as a space for you to talk to each other and exchange information and ideas between modules. I will visit it as well and will try to make meaningful contributions occasionally.
Just to start, thanks for Saturday. It is a bit daunting for tutors to stand up in front of a new group and get going, but I felt that the day went well.
If you have any outstanding questions (i.e. left unanswered - although the other kind would be welcome) let me know.
Good luck for the programme.

- Vein of Gold -- Ann Rippin, 01:02:22 10/02/01 Tue
Vein of Gold quote from Saturday.
‘All actors have a certain territory, a certain range, they were born to play. I call this their “vein of gold”. If you cast an actor within that vein, he will always give you a brilliant performance. Of course, you can always cast an actor outside his vein of gold. If you do, the actor can use craft and technique to give you a very fine, a very creditable performance, but never a performance as brilliant as when he is working in his vein of gold.’
Martin Ritt, quoted in Cameron, J. (1996) The Vein of Gold, London: Pan, p. 99
