Subject: I think it's part of the way they develop the players
In reply to: Hiwire 's message, "At the time of drafting the club declared Harry an explosive midfielder" on 09:13 09/09/24 Mon

From what I witnessed in the few VFL games I watched this year - and including the comments made by others in various forums - Demattia was transitioned into a more midfield-centric role later in the season, where he played some good games.

I think that the club has been preparing many players by not throwing them into the heat of the cauldron if they have had other opportunities but, instead, try to transition them into the game and allowing them to develop their skills accordingly.

In the VFL team, we largely utilised the likes Macrae, Allen, Sullivan and Carmichael, together with VFL-listed Long, Glover and Lane in the midfield as our primary go tos, especially early in the season.

This transition also wasn't helped when Demattia suffered a preseason injury in Feb (just prior to the practice matches commencing) and then did not debut for the VFL side until mid-late April.

It was later in the VFL season where Demattia saw some midfield time and reportedly did well.

I still believe that the club is planning on using him as a midfielder, which is the position he played as a junior and the position all his draft profiles had pegged him for.

Of course, with Collingwood winning the AFL Flag in 2023 and having the midfield combination of De Goey, Mitchell, Adams, Crisp, Pendles, Sidey and Nick (who also was made to work off half-back in his formative years before being swung into a primary midfield role) performing well, the likes of Macrae, Allan and co had not been required at senior level so their presence in the VFL has also meant that those who would replace them at VFL were also behind in the pecking order.

We know there are no guarantees, especially with drafting in the AFL, but for what it's worth, if you go back and revisit many of the draft profiles, you will find that all of Macrae, Allan and Demattia were pretty highly rated amongst their draft cohorts.

Both Twomey and Knightmare's phantom draft ratings had Demattia in the top 20 as a potential midfielder, with suggestions he could fulfill a number of roles at a club (including forward or defense).

Against, there is also agreement that the likes of Ed Allan and Finn Macrae being clearly in the first round, with Macrae getting a few projections that he could be snapped up in the top dozen picks of his draft year.

The thing that these guys have probably lacked to this point in time is opportunity.

But I guess we need to measure that against a list that - without them in the senior team - was able to win the Flag 12 months ago.

That's why I am still in "wait and watch" territory with respect to these players - and you can throw the names 'Reef McInnes', 'Jakob Ryan' and 'Tew Jiath' intoi that very same category.
