Last year's NIT expanded field (from 32 to 40) was referred by the NIT as an experiment.

I have been unable to find anything from the NIT indicating the number of teams in the field this year.

However, Titan Bob came across the article in the Chicago Sun Times which indicate that there may be "opening round" games. Opening round games were used last season to accommodate the expanded field. The article reported that UIC had already been approached about an "opening round" game against Depaul next Monday (just one day after the NIT selection annoucements) at All State Arena. Seems like ESPN would like to televise a game on Monday when no other basketball games are scheduled or would compete for viewers. Further, ESPN's website indicates it will air "first round" NIT games on Tuesday and Wednesday. It seems to me that under the 32 team field, the games didn't start until Wednesday or Thursday.

MY GUESS -
With the NIT moving to get the tournament started on Monday (one game +?), Tuesday (at least two on ESPN), and Wednesday (at least two on ESPN)it looks like the field will be 40.

If, by chance, the NIT field is limited to 32, the Titans will be staying home this season.

Does anyone have any other info regarding the number of NIT teams this season??
