Ava had felt very foreign on Arcane's arm. It was difficult for her to believe he was not secretly mocking her in some way. Though she told herself this immediate suspicion was of course due to her experience and the nature of her work, it was hard to push all thoughts of being set up somehow out of her head.
The place he took her to was quaint, not at all her style, but it was better than some fancy restaurant where people would stare. Fifi was sulking next to her but hadn't completely given up the hope that maybe Arcane would look twice her way without damaging his eyes on her bright hair.
"Ava," she said without hesitation when he inquired her name. "Ava of Rion. Daugher of Esceles of Rion."
Arcane seemed surprised. Esceles was notorious in this country. He had lived and died for the mark and had been one of the most significant spies to the throne at one point. It was dangerous, she knew, to admit that she was related to such a man, especially in these times, but she was never one for subtlety, and beside that she was proud. Fifi looked uncomfortable, glancing furiously around to see if anyone else had heard her.
She looked back to Arcane, expecting some look of disapproval or horror, and was absolutely shocked when he seemed calm, almost...pleased. There was much to learn about him yet, she thought.
