Thea sighed, as she did often, and sat up in bed. She had tried to sleep all night, finally pulling out The Assassin’s Handbook at around two in the morning for a quick perusal. Thea had already memorized every word of that book, as well as a great many others, but it helped her to relax, and reassured her that she might actually know what she was doing.
Thea cocked her head to one side, listening. The front door opened, closed, and then opened and closed again. Leica must be a bit uneasy too, she thought. I must try harder not to broadcast my feelings. Probably time for another clean-up. With an effort of will, she delved into her own mind and sifted through the feelings she knew would be there, carefully placing them in the order she wanted them, pushing Fear to the very back and ignoring the red glow it gave off. Determination sat near the front, its silver light strengthening her. Curiosity, with its beckoning yellow luminosity, went near the back, overpowering Fear and replacing both feelings with the orange glimmering Caution. I will need Caution more than I will need Fear or Curiosity. Not bad, not bad at all, Thea thought, pleased at her work. Nearly done now, Thea reached at last for Unease. Though its color changed all the time, it usually gave off a black and red tinged copper color. Thea was surprised to see it mostly black this time. Though the colors of feelings changed to indicate their degree, she had not realized that this particular feeling was so dominant. With an effort, she tried to change it back to its coppery hue, back to a feeling with less Fear and more Caution. When this did not work, she delved much deeper, past even the place where her now-demolished Fear would sit, and gathered the tiny speck of gold light that was her Courage. She pushed it into the bright redish black Unease, and it became coppery once more. It reminded her of Caution, but of a more deadly variety. Unease often brought mistakes with it, and a single mistake could mean her life. She placed this new Unease behind Caution, and put Courage back where it had been, deep in her mind. She could feel its light through all feelings, and so had never needed it at the front, where Determination's silver radiance still kept her attention on the task at hand.
Thea came out of her mind and sighed once more. Her mental chores had taken only a few brief seconds. She dressed rapidly and walked out of her room just after Leica's door closed. She walked silently past her cousin's room, then relaxed when she reached the kitchen. She quickly put away the steamed squid for later, then continued into the living room. Her book lay on the coffee table where she had left it. She picked it up, and with a wave of her hand and a whispered word, put it somewhere much safer. Thea walked out of the house and into Cala Armon. She still had a day or two to roam the familiar town and talk with her cousin before it was time. She wanted to make those few days as pleasant as possible for her, so that she did not have to think about the burning black feeling that she had felt, that feeling that only brought death to Assassins such as she. Thea turned towards Pairseas Tavern. She wanted to surprise Leica, maybe jump out at her as she came in to open the place up. That would be fun, and would give her a reason to laugh, something she needed a lot right now. And of course, she had act at least a little insane before she got bored. She unlocked the door to the Tavern, then locked it again when she was inside, and crouched in the shadows to wait, trying not to giggle.
