Subject: A question on sport dog techniques
In reply to: Jenny W 's message, "Re: Sports for breeding purposes" on 03:28:08 03/26/10 Fri

To change the subject slightly but still on the sport dog theme, can anyone tell me why the dogs are trained to bite an arm or sleeve? Surely this would expose the dog to injury if the attacker had a weapon in the other hand. My old Rottie who did a bit of police work in the UK in his time was trained to go for the weapon arm with the aim in mind of disarming the offender rather than anything else. My Boerboels have a natural tendency to aim for the upper torso and neck area and go in low and hard, rising at the last minute into the face, which has proved pretty hard to defend against, even if you can stay on your feet which is unlikely. Have dog sports evolved this technique for a reason or is it just a more effective way to train, handle as a decoy or judge a dog? It always seems a bit stylised to me and not necessarily the most effective in a real situation, although saying that, I wouldn't want even my arm bitten by a Boerboel!
