Standard feed was first, paintballs fed into the chamber at said angle. Blowback (excess gas escaping back up the feed tube) bobbled the balls (causing low feed rates) and even managed to bounce them up and chop them.

Powerfeed was invented to feed the paintball at a 45 degree angle (atop the chamber). This used the blowback gasses to bounce the paintball against the feed tube and into the chamber faster (increasing feed power). There was also less ball bobble (bouncing back up etc.) etc.

If you plan on shooting high rates of fire, Powerfeed is the way to go.
