[> Day 1 -- gs, 18:15:45 01/03/03 Fri

I got myself the nail polish I had my eye on since Tuesday as my reward for a great week last week. The sales lady talked me into buying the matching lip-gloss as well. So this is my new thing for today. Now you might ask what is this got to do with losing weight. Well last week that I stayed OP I went out four times, in which two times were tea parties with lots of sweets around. Sweets are my weakness, but I didn’t give in to temptations. At one party I had one pastry and the rest of the time I drink tea, in the other one I had two small cookies. It feel great that I was able to control myself, have a bit of treat but still stay within my points. So I am hoping next time that my sugar craving hit, I get my new nail polish and lip-gloss, put them on and think about how great I feel and how proud I am right now that I was in control last week and so I would stay in control and not give in to too much temptation. I will let you know if it worked.

[> Day 2 -- gs, 19:24:38 01/04/03 Sat

I tried a new banana bread recipe and it not only delicious it is only 2 points per serving. Here is the recipe:

Banana Bread – From Better Homes and Gardens New Dieter’s Cook Book

1½ cup all-purpose flour (12)
1¼ teaspoons baking powder (0)
½ teaspoon baking soda (0)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (0)
1/8 teaspoon salt (0)
2 slightly beaten egg whites (0.5)
1 cup mashed banana (4)
¾ cup sugar (I used Splenda) (1.5)
¼ cup cooking oil (I used safflower oil) (14)
Nonstick spay coating (0)

In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
In a large mixing bow stir together egg whites, banana, sugar and oil. Stir flour mixture into banana mixture just till moistened
Spray an 8x4x2-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray coating. Spread batter in prepared pan. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes or till a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
Cool bread in the pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool thoroughly on a wire rack. For easier slicking, wrap the bread in plastic wrap and store overnight.
Makes 1 loaf (32 points), 16 serving (2 points each).

[> Day 3 -- gs, 11:25:16 01/05/03 Sun

Tried a new exercise class, Spinning, very cool! I highly recommend it. I am going to take the class once a week and when I become more advanced I will increase it to twice a week.

[> Day 4 -- gs, 19:31:27 01/06/03 Mon

I drink lot of tea. In wintertime I even substitute some of my water with decaf tea. So this morning I thought I should try some new flavor. Walked into Starbucks near work and got myself Decaffeinated Tazo Lotus. It is green tea but has a fruity flavor. I had never tried green tea, I had heard it is really good for the body but I always drink black tea. It is pretty good I liked it. I am going to try other Tazo flavors too, they have a lemon flavor and citron flavor, but they are not decaf. Anyway green tea was my new thing for today.

[> Day 5 -- gs, 13:48:21 01/07/03 Tue

Today I tried Campbell’s Soup at Hand. They have four different flavors and I tried Creamy Chicken (3.75 points, 980 mg Sodium) for lunch. I also got the other three flavors: Blended Vegetable Medley (1.5 point, 950 mg Sodium), Cream of Broccoli (3 points, 980 mg Sodium), and Classic Tomato (2 points, 970 mg Sodium). Cream of Chicken was very delicious and very satisfying. The only thing I didn’t like about it is the amount of sodium in it. I like low sodium food, but I guess once a week I could handle one high salt food. And the Tomato and Vegetable one are very low in points. I wonder if they taste as good as Cream of Chicken. Anyway, whichever ones I liked I am going to stock on them for the next couple of months. Cold winter days and tasty-hot-low point soup, where can I go wrong.

[> Day 6 -- gs, 23:18:27 01/08/03 Wed

A friend/coworker paid me a compliment today! She asked me if I had lost weight since I looked thinner to her. I told her I had stopped weighing myself almost two weeks ago because the scale was driving me crazy, but I said my cloths seem to fit the same. It was very nice of her to say that. But I am not sure if she said it because I looked thinner to her or she said it to be nice to me. She sees me often at the gym working hard! Anyway whatever her reasons it was very nice of her to say that and it has effected me in a very good way, I am very motivated to continue my exercise routine.

Now on to new thing to try tonight, I tried Yoga. A friend of mine has been doing Yoga for couple of years now and has been saying lots of good things about it. My body is very inflexible and I am very interested in trying to change that. I have been looking for a solution and anything I have read suggests trying Yoga and Pilates. So I asked my friend if I could borrow one of her Yoga DVDs. She brought it for me today and I tried it. It was a very good DVD. There are four performers, beginner, intermediate, advanced and very advanced, which we can select from. I selected the beginner and the moves were reasonable for me. I have plans to try the beginner segment a few more times and then advance to intermediate. The program lasted about an hour. In the first part the emphasis was on breathing. This part lasted about 10 minutes, I think. Then it advanced to stretching, I think for little over 40 minutes. And then it went back to relaxing poses and more breathing. I liked it a lot. It was very soothing.

[> Day 7 -- gs, 18:39:33 01/09/03 Thu

I made a new WW recipe tonight. It is Cream of Broccoli, very easy and it came out great. One serving, 1 and ¾ cups only 2 points and very delicious and satisfying. Here is the recipe:

Cream of Broccoli Soup

Prep Time | 14 min
Cook Time | 20 min
Level of Difficulty | Easy

Ingredients

1 medium onion(s), chopped
1 medium garlic clove(s), minced
2 pound broccoli, tough ends removed, stems and florets chopped
4 cup chicken broth, or vegetable broth
1 cup fat-free evaporated milk
1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce
1/8 tsp table salt, or to taste
1/8 tsp black pepper, or to taste

Instructions

Put onion and garlic in a 2-quart saucepan with 1/4 cup water and simmer until onion is soft, about 10 minutes; spoon into large pot.

Add broccoli and broth to onion mixture and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, turn down heat and simmer until broccoli is soft but still green, about 8 minutes. Do not cover pot while broccoli is cooking or it will turn gray.

Remove soup from heat and puree in batches in a blender until smooth. (Note: Be careful not to overfill blender to prevent the hot liquid from splattering.) Add evaporated milk and hot pepper sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Yields about 1 3/4 cups per serving.

POINTS

Serves | 4
POINTS per serving | 2

Next I want to try the same recipe but with mushrooms instead of broccoli.

[> Score: 10 -- gs, 18:54:57 01/09/03 Thu

I did well on this challenge. I am going to give myself a 10 since I tried a new thing everyday of this week. I am so glad we had this challenge. Bev suggested this one. I have read many articles suggesting that everyone should try new exercises and new recipes to prevent the body of getting used to the exercise routine and to prevent the taste to get bored, respectively. While reading the articles I always promised myself that I would try new things, but I never did! This challenge pushed me to try new things and I am so glad I that I raised to the occasion. I am very excited about the Spinning class I took last Sunday and can’t wait to do it again this Sunday. It doesn’t seem like I want to go to gym to workout for an hour, it is more like I want to have fun for an hour. Trying new foods has made me crave less sweet stuff and feel very satisfied.

Now for my reward I’ve decided that I am going to make myself a CD. I have gotten too many CDs lately that I only like a few songs on each. So I thought it was time to make one CD with all my favorite songs. So I will burn a cool CD for myself and will label it "Reward for Spring Countdown Challenge #2" so I always will remember it.
