David Burge captured the spirit of the redneck along with the elegant structure of Japanese haiku. Read his poetry here:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=redneck+haiku+david+burge+1999

Then, when you're done, check out some of Randy's, Debbie's, and my efforts--and get ready to add your own!

Yes, Debbie Teal and Lisa Black challenge you to a BQ haiku contest (or redneck haiku, if you think the genre isn't overworked now). Post your entries here, and the winner (by popular vote) gets a valuable, guaranteed fresh, prize!

Here are some of Randy Duncan's redneck haiku (because he's too modest to submit them himself):

Sweatin my ass off,
My shirt is completely soaked,
Louisiana.

Paradiddles were
The way I got attention.
Band kept me in school.

This internet thing
Brings us all so much closer.
Thank you much Al Gore.

When I play the drums
I feel I'm a big part of
The rhythm of Life.

Nice guys finish first.
San Antonio Spurs Rule.
David Robinson.

More from Randy:

Remember that time
When I just dropped my snare drum
And kept on walkin?

Playin Jethro Tull
licks on the orchestra bells
With Janet and Rick.

Old Milwaukee quarts
were only fifty nine cents
What a great breakfast.

Ramblerettes got all
excited when we marched em
up to the bleachers.

Robin and Debbie
Worlds apart but still right here
Amazing email.

I never liked him
poor old mr bob lewis
dunno why either.

Reunions are great.
Still lost in the seventies
but so what? It rocked.

A familiar thump
No drive thru for me tonight
Raccoon sauce piquante.

Poor little Robin
Way over there in England
Why dontcha move back?

And my response:

Robin, a slave to
British pop culture, rattles
her gold chains, and dreams...

Pubs, great wine and cheese,
Changing Rooms, blackbirds--keep her
on this green island.

In contrast, Texas
offers the Bush family,
guns, chiggers, and heat.

To Robin, the heat
is the best part--except for
the low house prices.

A miniscule flat
in Surrey, or a ranch house
on half an acre?

Both available for
a thousand a month (but lawn
mowers cost extra).

Anyway, Robin
has cast the dice--she's headed
back to SAT.

Pray she remembers
to drive on the right, and how
to eat tamales.

Or, once again,
she'll hear the phrase: You ain't from
around here, are you?

Some of Debbie's poetic offerings:

Good eatin' tonight
Scraped from mah pickup's mudflaps
Homemade possum pie.

Art and Nature meet
Across from my La-Z-Boy --
Bigmouth Billy Bass.

Leaking trailer roof
Finally, indoor plumbing
No more horse trough baths.

O! Thelma, my love,
Your luminescent skin glows
Like grits in moonlight.

Okay, here are my "Two BQ Haikus":

Shakos were shaping
My hair, my mind, my vision
Styling my future

A BQ haiku
Words about music and friends
Marching rhythms and time

I don't think I'll be enrolling in any poetry slams anytime soon, but I sure had fun doing this! Lisa
