The self check outs are evil. They are destined to put a lot of people out of work. I encourage everyone to use them to steal every chance you get. Quite simply they are designed to put Joe Working class in the unemployment line, while increasing profits for Chester Corporate Grocery Store Chain Owner. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the conveince of them. There is never any wait time, unless you go to a grocery store in a black neighborhood, in which case it would likely be quicker to just use the normal cashier checkout.

The weight issue is deffinately put in place to keep us from ripping them off. I would think that each time you scan an item, the weight of said item is put into a data base of an accepted weight for each item in the store. If an item doesnt match a certain accepted deviation from recorded weight in the data base, it wont let you continue.
If this is the case, in theory it will get harder and harder to steal from the grocery stores. Maybe this accounts for the slight lag time after you scan an item and the time it tells you to put it in the bag? So in theory, if you scan a cup of yougart and then place it along with an additional (unscanned) cup of yougart in the bag, the computer will say "Thats one heavy assed cup of yougart" and it will call the attendent over.

If that, or a similar system is not what is being used, then the grocery stores are fools and deserve to be ripped off.

With a bit of cleverness, you can still stick it to the man.
When you are buying fruit or vegtables, make note of the cheapest crap fruit or vegatable per pound out there. Then claim that item when you are weighing the actual more expensive item. At Deirbergs, the Danishes cost 1.29, while the Cripsy Creme donuts are only .39. The Donuts have their own bag with a bar code on them. Go there, and take the crispy creme bag and fill it with danishes. The cashier at the self check out lane wont open the bag to check, because the cashier is you. Score!!!

Good luck, and continue to fight the good fight!
Millions of soon to be out of work cashiers are depending on you!
