Laborious and noxious process, but well worth it. In the areas I could access reasonably easily I applied a layer of mat followed by a layer of 1/2" balsa. Then another layer of mat, and finishing with a layer of roving. Besides adding insulating value it does add stiffness without much added weight. In the tighter areas I used 1/2" closed cell (expensive!) which I glued on with regular formica adhesive - cheap but very toxic to breath. You must wear a good breathing apparatus while doing all this, ventilate well, and don't light any matches! Good luck!
