Euro's often forget that Americans are among the most generous in the world, giving billions of dollars to domestic and international charities. For all the Euro's talk about 'international' community, its the Americans who continually give.

In absolute terms, this may be true. But don't forget that our countries in Europe are much smaller and have much smaller budgets. If you take the relative amount of e.g. the official development assistance, in percentage, then it looks quite different.

Let me quote from www.cbpp.org/4-25-00bud-pr.htm:

"The [ODC] report also examines OECD measures of "Official Development Assistance," which is aid targeted on poor countries. The OECD data indicate that under several measures, the United States provides less such aid than other industrial nations do. When compared to the other 20 donor nations in terms of the share of national resources devoted to development aid for poor countries in 1997-98, the United States provided the lowest share by far. The typical country contributed more than three times the share of national resources that the United States did."

If you compare domestic charities, you will also get a wrong picture because in Europe most countries have a better governmental social welfare system, so less private donations or foundations or support from the industry is needed.

According to the DZI, Germans donated this year 2.3 billion dollars for social welfare (aside from the governmental taxes and duties), although we are in a phase of economical depression, many are unemployed and we have to support the eastern part of our country which was ruined by communism.

I think it is a myth that Americans are more generous than Europeans, though I do not want to deny that Americans are generous.
