Subject: New book about Pope John Paul II

A new book called : A Life With Karol: My Forty Year Friendship With the Man Who Became Pope. By Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, will be available to the public on March 4, 2008.

Dziwisz was JP II's secretary for 40 years. In this book Dziwisz, states how he and JPII would slip pass the guards at the Vatican and would go off skiing etc... When I was doing my research I had heard that JPII, dressed up as a nun once and slipped outside the Vatican Walls. Snuck out a few times but I couldn't prove it.

This book was released this past January in Italian, then Polish. It got great reviews. I am thrilled it will be out in English. It will be a very interesting book even if one didn't like Pope John Paul II.

I bought the book on Mother Teresa--the book of letters--but I haven't started reading it yet.

It's probably one of those books that you read in small doses over many months. I think it would be drudgery otherwise.

...Shoes of a Fisherman? It was done in the late 60s and starred Anthony Quinn as a humble Russian priest who becomes Pope as kind of a compromise candidate. In that movie, he dressed as an ordinary priest and sometimes wandered the streets of Rome at night just to get a glimpse of what the common man was up to. It is 1 of the best movies I've ever seen and I'm surprised its not mentioned among the all-time greats. Just an opinion tho.

Thx for giving us info on that book Neysa. It sounds really good. Take care, God Bless,

Phil from cool AZ

I don't remember the movie with Anthony Quinn. But, there was a movie with Gregory Peck. He plays an Irish priest who works in the Vatican during the Nazi occupation of Rome during WWII. In order to leave the Vatican and enter Rome which was guarded by the Nazi's he would dress up in different outfits. Chritopher Plummer is also in this movie he plays a high ranking Nazi officer who is in charge of Rome. I cannot remember the name of the movie but it was very good.

I just remembered the name of the movie. The Scarlet and the Black. Made in 1983. Not to be confused with a mini-series made in 1990's with the same name.
