"Too commercial" we cry. *Everyone* says it. Well, then who the heck is doing all this shopping that makes the holiday so commercial?! ;-)
Maybe we need to get a new mirror in our stockings this Crhi--aaahhhh--- Xmas. I just can't type shri--lol I give up.
I know I do my fair share of making it commercial. I don't worry about it, though. Christmas (corect after 5 errors, good grief) isn't as important as Easter. Easter is the more important day, but most don't care much about it. I wonder if most realize that in rank of importance, Easter is way above Xmas. No one worries that they sell Easter trees, baskets, candy, decorations, etc. And that stuff is out really early, too. I wonder why that is? From what I hear, the gifts in the Easter baskets have escalated in value quite a bit since my son was little.

Since you asked....lol
It's like anything else that the world gets their little greedy hands on. Eventually the beauty of faith, religion, or whatever you choose to call it, gets corrupted once touched by the hoarding mob. It's a time for big profit as retailers prey on the emotions of the public. Yes. Sadly, the dollar signs do often outshine the desire for true understanding and enjoyment of the holiday. However, that's not true of everyone and I'm thankful for that.

You're right of course. But what I refuse to do is fall into the trap of buying what is "hot" for Christmas or stuffing cash into one of those cards made to fit your money. I will chose a smaller, more personal item, in lieu of what might be a mega hit with my recipient. I am a consumer and of course if I celebrate Christmas or any other holiday I am giving into the commercialism to some degree. But, there are ways to avoid the big bucks they hope you will spend.
As for Easter, There would be none if it weren't for Christmas. :) (Just had to throw that in there) I refuse to fall into the trap of Easter's past when I was growing up. Everyone had to don new outfits, with everything purchased just for Easter, from head (hats) to toe (shoes). Then of course the elaborate Easter baskets were to be had too. Shame on me, even with Makayla, I have gone overboard - at least one Easter.;) Then I thought, what in the world am I doing?! I'm truly losing sight of the purpose and falling into the consumer trap of buying more more, more. Grrr!

It's easy to fall into the trap, because it's so darned much fun. :-)
I spend my share on Xmas, but I enjoy it so much. My nieces and nephews love my gifts. I'm such a bargain hunter, and they get lots of little things in one package. It's like a giant stocking in a box.
Even if Xmas wasn't a consumer's holiday, I'd be right in there making it commercial for myself. Any excuse to shop. I even do my family's shopping for them. I was my father's personal shopper for years.
Maybe that's why I'm not bothered by the whole thing. I love to shop. It doesn't stress me to do it. The challenge of finding a gift that will really tickle the recipient is one of my favorite things to do. That and the fact that I never stop looking for Xmas gifts. I guess that's why it's so easy for me. When I see it, I buy it. If I waited until Dec. I might feel stressed about it like everyone else.
You bring back memories of Easter. Every year we got a new dress, spring coat, hat, and shoes. Well, some years I got my sister's old shoes, gloves, and tights. Problem was that they didn't really fit. She was 2 years older, but I was bigger than she was the previous Easter. So I had shoes that pinched, tights that weren't quite long enough, and gloves that didn't fit -think of the picture of O.J. w/ the glove defense, only not as small. :-)
Oh, and those straw hats itched. But I loved every minute of it just the same. The thrill of the new, special outfit was part of the excitement. And the thought of a basket full of candy could just send me. :-)
But we only got candy. I don't think there was ever any toy, coloring book, or anything like that. Just candy. OK by me and my sweet tooth.
What was your favorite Easter candy? Mine was a solid chocolate Easter bunny. It just tasted better in that shape. :-)

Do you remember the patent leather shoes? Those and the Easter hats I remember most. I recall the squeek sound of my new shoes and the "crunch" sound from my stiff new crinolines. Good grief. lol But by far the hollow chocolate bunnies were my favorites. Did you like the Peeps? I did when I was young, and I must have eaten more than my share because today they make me sick to look at them! lol

Peeps -- Joan, 05:15:27 08/17/07 Fri [1] (ip68-0-253-131.ri.ri.cox.net/68.0.253.131)
I never liked Peeps. I loved jelly beans, except the black ones, and malted milk balls.
Yep, all 4 of us girls had Mary Janes. We had black for Christmas (got it first shot!) and white for Easter.
Did you get you basket before or after church? We woke up and found our baskets. Then we had to be torn away to get ready for church.

Those special patent leather shoes, and the crinolines...that the wider they stuck out, the better.
My next door neighbour lady, a lovely old soul, gave me a big solid chocolate Easter bunny each year, and like Joan said, in that shape it tasted even better! :-) I tried to make it last and last.
