Subject: Sacrament of Reconciliation

This question is for anyone...how often do you go to confession- once a month, once a year as the Catholic Church requires ( Easter Duty )- every so often, not at all?

I attended a Catholic grade and high school. In grade school we were made to go to confession once a month. If you got the mean, old , pastor instead of one of the nice priests, it was a scary experience.

In the Catholic high school that I attended no one forced us to go to confession like they did in grade school. But one day I had a very bad experience while going to confession. That was 24 years ago...that was the last time I ever went.

Weather permitting, I walked to communion nearly every Sat, with my sister at the local Catholic center. Mom joked that we should get everything out of our system, so we'd be gone a long time. That way, she could get her chores (mainly cleaning and laundry) done w/o the hassle of her two oldest kids around. LoL

It was kind of unique. You just went into a large room and sat there and spoke to the priest. There was no confessional booth, and I had to look the priest in the eye. Since my folks were strict, I had to make up borderline stuff up to tell the priest...I was such a lil' angel. Oh yeah, right! LoL

While I have since converted to Prot'sm, I am proud of my Catholic upbringing, and always remember those happy days of walking with my sister to the center for 1 thing or another.

Take care, God Bless,

Phil from AZ

Scary, even if the priest is nice. I prefer face-to-face Confession to the confessional. Yikes, it's scary in there. :-)

I do the Easter obligation, but didn't this year. I know I should go, but it's a very uncomfortable thing for me. They say that if you go frequently, it's helpful.

To those of you who've gone frequently--Did you find it helpful? Did it get easier the more you went?

Joan

...the easier it got. It is kinda uncomfortable, like going for a job interview or admitting you did something wrong at work. Take care, God Bless,

Because I knew my catechism , and I was a good student. I was one of three first graders allowed to make my first communion with the second grade class. When I think back now, I think I was just too young.
I remember my first confession. It was a Saturday afternoon. When my dad came to pick me up at the church, he was just beaming with pride. ( That was only confession).
I never felt comfortable going. I can remember the old priest we had " Fr. George" he would stick his glasses right up against the screen and stare right at us. He would make us stick our faces up against the screen too. It wasn't until I was in 8th grade and a few of us girls were cleaning the church. I went into the priests side of the confessional. One of my friends went into the other side. On the priests side there was night light. I turned it on...when my friend on the other side put her face up against the screen, I could see her perfectly. When I get nervous I tend to smile and sometimes even laugh. In the confessional Fr. George would ask me why I was smiling. I would think to myself it is dark in here how can he see.
As I got older the more uncomfortable I felt going. I have felt guilty, because I have gone to communion, and have not been to confession in all these years. To think of all the mortal sins I now have! Eight years ago I made an attempt to go to confession. I had the great honor of attending a morning Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II, in his chapel. I took communion. I felt so guilty, that I went to Saint Peter's in the Vatican that afternoon. I went over to the only English priest available that was hearing confession. I stood in line. I was in that line for 20 min., then I lost my nerve and couldn't go. I never tried to go since, although I often think about it.
