Thanks for the example. Do you have some sort of brief general summary statement of what you think is going on with these procedures, why they are being done and who is doing them?

As for commenting on this particular example:

Examined from a skeptical point of view there are 2 possibilities:

1. It's exactly what they said, the kid got a catheter in case he peed during his surgery. I've know several people who worked in the health care industry, and some years ago, the attitude toward this sort of thing was, if the kid pees on the table, somebody will clean it up; the table has to be cleaned anyway before it can be used again.

2 The catheter was a part of or a result of some sort of pelvic procedure, possibly cystoscopy and/or something else. Tonsillectomies aren't cheap, and if the kid's account is true, to perform one at the request of the parent without any kind of medical referral seems rather odd and out of character for the medical establishment. Tonsillectomy is not generally considered an elective surgery. About the only elective surgical procedure I know that a parent in the USA could get performed on their kid would be circumcision. Plus, I agree that specifically soliciting patients for tonsillectomies seems rather odd.

Thank you for your responses and answering my questions.
