He smiled, really smiled, as she laughed. He was glad he could give her that for a last memory of them, knowing it would make her smile to look back on. He clung to that smile as she kiss his cheek. As she gathered her bags and bid him farewell. Though by the time she looked back at him it had fallen to just a hint of a smirk at the edge of his lips. Leaning back against his jeep, watching the little minx who'd so thoroughly destroyed his idea of a relationship... Without having even been in a relationship with him... How the hell had she done that?
He pondered that question for nearly fifteen minutes, till one of the security officers came over to politely ask him if everything was alright. Even those here in the city knew who he was. He aught to be flattered. The sour mood that had overtaken him wasn't about to allow that. Instead he mumbled that he was just leaving, climbing heavily into his truck and driving away from the airport.
Not five minutes later he was pulling the old jeep to a halt in a field off the highway. He sat for a long while, gaze locked on the fading ink upon his right arm. Such a severe reminder of his youth, before he'd had responsibilities. Before people depended on him. Before he was trapped. In less than a month his job had gone from an all consuming passion to a ball and chain, keeping him from the single thing he wanted. His fist struck the dash with enough force to split the knuckle of his middle digit, sending pain shooting up his arm.
Snarling, he pulled a pack of cigarettes from the glove box, nearly ripping the door off its hinges as he stormed from the vehicle. He slammed the door, rocking the truck on its shocks as he moved several paces away. He all but tore the pack of cigarettes open, sliding one between his lips and lighting it up with a snarl. He was being stupid! He was stupid to let her leave. He was stupid for thinking she could stay. He was stupid as Fuck for even having this argument with himself!
But rather than get back in his truck and drive back to work, he stood there for a good forty minutes. Watching plane after plane take off, till he'd convinced himself she was gone. Completely out of his reach. Hell, he knew hers had been one of the first few to take off, it had just taken him that long to admit defeat.

He was late for work. Glancing at his watch, he cringed. He was seriously late. And that was something that just never happened. He knew Sabrina was going to give him an earful, and he honestly couldn't find fault in that idea. Maybe if the feisty blonde stayed on his ass for the next few weeks he could get through them...
He pulled into his parking stall, still in a piss poor mood but feeling like he could deal with the day. If barely. Stepping from the jeep, he clipped his pistol and his badge to his belt, pulled his jacket on, pocketed his keys and locked his truck up. He'd get through today, than he'd get through tonight... He'd worry about tomorrow when it came.
I'm not strong enough to stay away Can't run from you I just run back to you Like a moth I'm drawn in to your flame Say my name, but it's not the same You look in my eyes I'm stripped of my pride And my soul surrenders and you bring my heart to its knees
And it's killin' me when you're away, I wanna leave and I wanna stay I'm so confused,So hard to choose Between the pleasure and the pain And I know it's wrong, and I know it's right Even if I try to win the fight, my heart would overrule my mind And I'm not strong enough to stay away |
