I'm 22 and as an only child did not witness spankings of siblings and have never been eager to share my spankings. I've always felt rather embarrassed than proud about them. In our family mom was the one doing the spankings and dad never did. He was more a softie and grounded me. I got my first spanking at 7 when I forgot how spelling works over christmas break and we had a test in school and out of 8 words I spelled 7 wrong. I was hiding the test in my school bag not telling mom about it... yes I know how stupid... and she found it the next day when putting the lunch box in my bag. I got my first hand spanking and I remember crying and feeling very embarrassed. I was mostly well behaved but still got spanked a couple of times per year, mostly for school issues and behavior at home. They were all hand spankings over mom's knee in my room. At 11 I got into a fight in school with a friend and broke many of her pens out of anger. Her mom told my mom and I got the hairbrush for the first time. That was quite a shocker. My mom was always scolding lots and in combination with the pain of the brush.... lets say I did my best to avoid the hairbrush afterwards. I guess puberty had started though and I was not very successful avoiding it. My spankings got more frequent rather than less and mom spanked with hand and hairbrush, from about age 13 I think she only used the hairbrush. I hated and dreaded it but I did try to do better after each spanking and I know they were deserved. I never got spanked without a good reason. My last spanking was at age 15. It was very embarrassing and I felt very similarly to how Vicky's older sister must have felt. I read her long description in this thread. It's a longer story but I was caught smoking. It was the first time I tried it. I had not been spanked in over a year and I thought mom had stopped and I wouldn't get it again. It was the longest and hardest hairbrush spanking I've gotten and dad grounded me afterwards as well. I did my best to avoid any further spankings but tbh I know I'd have deserved some when I was 16/17 but mom didn't spank anymore. She never said why and I didn't ask. I was happy about it but looking back I know they would have been deserved. When I started college I missed the structure and discipline and lately I started looking back and reflecting and that's how I ended up here. Spanked when very young. Spanked for fighting at the age of 10. More substantial implement was introduced. Yes of course please feel free to ask whatever interests you. Your first question if spankings helped my behavior is the most difficult to answer. First I want to say that I absolutely believe that boundaries, limits, rules are most important for children and they helped me grow. I miss them in college. I see from others my age that they didn't have any limits, they didn't learn how to deal with money constraints, curfew or any other restrictions. That never ends good. Once limits are set it means that any breaking of rules must have consequences. The consequences were very clear for me growing up and that's what I become to appreciate. However I think I would have turned out the same with different consequences. There are alternatives to spanking that can work as well. I think I need a bit more distance to my own spankings to judge that better. I did behave better after a spanking but I also did my best that mom didn't find out about any misbehavior, so I became more sneaky at times, which is not good. Looking back I think I would have needed consequences, maybe even spankings in my mid to late teens and feel I'd have deserved them at that age but didn't get any. I'm not so sure if they were necessary when I was younger. I'm sure it is difficult for parents to start with them later though. Getting spanked from mom was never exciting for me but I had a special interest in hearing about others getting spanked from a young age. I think that was even before I got my first spanking. My neighbors got it and while I never saw them get it, I could hear it occasionally which got me very curious while feeling sorry for them at the same time. My own spankings might have contributed but I think that special interest was there even before. I do not know why though. I don't think I will spank my own children but I will set boundaries, limits and consequences. I know that really helps. If spanking turns out to be necessary than I would do it the same way as my mom did it. I hope that helps a bit. When did you start spanking and what are your first experiences with it? I didn't agree as a child and hated it when she would go on to say that all her kids benefited from spankings. Even if she didn't say that I was still being spanked as a teenager, I would blush every time the subject came up. Like you, I was always interested in spankings that other kids got. There was a family that I babysat for who would spank their son and daughter if they misbehaved for me. I didn't get to see it, but the mother gave a very vivid description of how she disciplined. I didn't have permission to spank them myself, but I sure wanted to. Veronica, I'm older than you and have two daughters who are 10 and 7. They don't need it very often, but we do use spanking when they misbehave. It probably won't continue too much longer, as I really think my mom stayed with the spanking tool too long. Your babysitting experiences sound exciting. It must have been soo embarrassing for the children knowing that their mom told you all about their spankings. It's a pity that you never saw or got a chance to discipline them yourself. I'm really not sure if I would spank my children but your approach sounds very reasonable and def not excessive. Just a few playful swats from my husband, usually on my birthday or maybe when I'm acting a little feisty. We're definitely not into any kind of domestic discipline though! Rob was spanked growing up too, but he was quite surprised to learn that I got it into my high school years. We both think that was too old, but that our two girls haven't outgrown it yet.
