Dark eyes shyly looking out from under his long-ish hair, Tathan was making his slow way down the corridor. Moving a few steps forward, he dipped his mop into the pail of water mixed with soapsand, and washed the stone floor of the corridor around him – before picking up the pail and moving forward once again. The door to the weyr nearest to him was open, and he couldn’t help but look in – even though he wasn’t supposed to. The woman who had charge of the newer drudges was adamant on that. You didn’t spy on the riders, because they needed all the rest they could get – they were the guardians of Pern, after all. But the woman was nice to him, seemed to have taken him under her wing, as it were. She knew that he liked to be on his own more than anything, so she gave him the more solitary jobs: like mopping the floor of the corridors in the weyrs.

His eyes widened when a large canine left the open door of the weyr, but it paid him no heed and so he carried on. The only canines he had encountered before now had been the ones the Holdless trained for hunting, and for collecting that game shot down from the sky. But a lot of the riders and other people here kept them as pets, for companionship. Tath had never encountered that before. Lots of people here had fire-lizards, as well, that he knew. They made good pets, he’d been told – but they couldn’t be the kind of thing someone like him should have, could they?

Trying to be as quiet as he could be, he did the floor outside the open door. Picking up a strand of wool from the floor, he looked into the weyr. Though he had been told not to disturb riders, and the young woman looked so peaceful with her embroidery, the young man knocked on the door politely. “Greenrider?” He asked, biting his lip – he still didn’t like talking to people – and holding up the wool in his hand by way of explanation, and reaching down to pick up more of the blanket that the two creatures had torn apart. “D’you want me to take that ripped blanket away?”
