Diane, most all Mothers have used an appliance that does what you're talking about - we call them "Vaporizers." They make dampness all over the room though, and that is why I thought a humidifier would probably do the same thing. (It didn't give me an instant's hesitaton when I had sick kidlets though - those croupy or dry hacking coughs are scary as well as exhausting for child and parent.)
